Free market is that lasy thing the capitalist wants. The hypothetical you suggest exists for example in Germany where there are 200, that's two hundred private...that's private insurance companies all competing for business. Oh shoot, that's right, they only make a reasonable return on capital...not 30% like their American counterparts. So what Americans have as a first duty, is to...be a profit. When it comes to purchasing health care for your family or in your later years...a whopping profit. For all of those that feel so weak they must denigrate Obama, recall that the health care industry practically wrote this bill as has big business written most of our economic laws and regulations (or non-regulations) for over 30 years. Airlines, telecommunications, video broadcast, steel, lumber, agriculture...shall I go on ? That's how a plutocracy works. It isn't actual bribery, it is access and that access buys the contributors access to the very terms of the bill being voted on. Don't need to buy votes if I can buy the law itself and through the chairman and the majority party.

Peace and comfort, Michael No it is not essentially what elected officials get. To start with there is a 20% copay on all doctors visits and outpatient procedures. The drug plan (part D) requires a second monthly premium which you have to get from a private insurance company. There is very little vision, dental or mental health coverage. It might be better than the ACA but it is far from an ideal plan.

Even those programs most people associate as only "government" run still have those nasty, sticky fingers of insurance companies dipping into the pot. If they did as DS suggested and put everyone one on medicare do you think that would change?

Everyone simply moves from one type of insurance to another. Costs will still be high. It might even go higher. Medicare still has a co-pay and items that are not covered by Medicare. Many out of pocket expenses to make money on.
