The United States has concluded that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime has used chemical weapons in the fight against its own people, the White House announced today.

"Following a deliberative review, our intelligence community assesses that the Assad regime has used chemical weapons, including the nerve agent sarin, on a small scale against the opposition multiple times in the last year," Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes said in a written statement. "The use of chemical weapons violates international norms and crosses clear red lines that have existed within the international community for decades."

While traces of chemical weapons in Syria were detected by the U.S. intelligence community months ago, President Obama and his administration had delayed making a determination on who had used the deadly agents.

The president has said repeatedly that the use of chemical weapons would cross a "red line" and be a "game-changer" that would prompt greater American involvement in the crisis.

"The president has said that the use of chemical weapons would change his calculus, and it has," Rhodes said.

The intelligence community estimates that 100 to 150 people have died from chemical weapons attacks in Syria to date.

Now what?

Not sure Tazzy,but certainly something more than a press conference,no ?
The man has no choice save to act ,right?

slvemike4u -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/13/2013 7:01:46 PM)

Let me add this,no matter what he does.....the right will find cause to bitch,moan and whine.

MarVet82 -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/13/2013 7:02:50 PM)

If we continue, I highly doubt that we are just now starting, to provide weapons to the rebels and Russia and China continue to supply Syria the we can be assured that the whole thing will expand and Israel may step in to support the rebels and then all bets are off. Then again we are talking future events and nothing is set in stone.

Now what?

As I've been saying for some time, they need to find a good war for us to participate in. Perhaps this is it?

MarVet82 -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/13/2013 7:09:44 PM)

Well we are pushing our national ten *year* war schedule, and a good war always boosts the economy.

Two things:
    1. Push the UN Security Council to, maybe, perhaps, if it's not to inconvenient, to do authorize something other than a harshly worded letter.
    2. Find out where the chemical weapons came from

As far as slavemike's statement that no matter what the R's will find something to bitch about, he's probably right, but, at the same time, I can't see this as a "win" for Team Obama (outside of the US), no matter what he does. I just can't see this playing out well for us. It will result, much like it has before, in the US facing consequences as it has before.

Thus, I support President Obama's continued hesitation on getting involved. We'll take less flak and there won't be as much blowback in the future. Just my opinion.

Desideri,
I admit that the usa is in a bit of a rock and hard place right now, but right now my thoughts are with one of us..who is trapped in Damascus and we're both brainstorming on how to get his ass outta there. Is this an impossibiliality to try to just extricate Ashjor from out of there. He just wants to not get caught in the crossfire. Waking up to air missile strikes that shake you from your bed and hearing fighter jets waking u up, is not the place he wants to be and I can't say I blame him. Think, Barack maybe do this just ONE favor for the people that voted for him? Or am I delusional to even THINK this could be a possibility?

ES

I think getting all US Citizens out of Syria would be a great mission for the US military. Just an extrication mission. No engaging anyone, but return fire is acceptable for protection. Get our people out, and then get out.

No, I don't see it happening. I see Obama setting up with the rebels that we'll eventually have to fight against somewhere down the road.

MariaB -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/14/2013 1:30:50 PM)

The US Intelligence Community (and the British and French) need to be 'slam dunk' sure that they have got this right and haven't been duped.

why would Assad risk crossing Obama's red line? Absolute proof of poisoning by chemical weapons has only been found on two people, one dead body and one survivor.

Could the rebels commit genocide on a small scale to ensure rapid help from the west?

Politesub53 -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/14/2013 5:13:18 PM)

Nice post Maria. If we set down a red line that has been crossed, then as you say, we MUST be sure.

I can tell you that no European country wants refugees from Syria, especially not Greece; trying to get into Greece may even get a refugee drowned, and most certainly often imprisoned.

I think that Ashjor's best bet at the moment is to either take a side and fight - or to dig a deep hole and to wait it out in there until the madness ends.

We are talking exactly WMD. Our facts need to be spot on though.

That is hardly a WMD, I would say. Besides, even if true, who used these lethal gasses? May they have been false flag murders?

tazzygirl -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/14/2013 6:34:40 PM)

They could have been. We dont know yet. Russia is arguing that they proof is silly and not worth considering.

Sorry I wasn't clear Polite,but I was being sarcastic about a past assertion where WMD's were concerned [8|]

Paladin9 -> RE: Syria chemical use (6/14/2013 6:59:26 PM)

Is this info from the same intelligence community, the US govt, that said Saddam had MWDs.

At one time I took most of what came out of DC as truth, no more, I would not believe them if they said the sun was coming up in the morning. Ds or Rs they are all self-serving, lying greedy, crooks.

As for war, Ike's biggest worry when he left office was the power of the war machine, the companies that make big money off war.

Even those who agreed to invade Iran later called Bush a war monger, where are they now. Obomba has our sons and daughters in more combat zones than any other POTUS. And the worst part is our troops are just moving targets, they can't engage and can't return fire. So why are we there? We are there so war companies can get rich.

In 2001 Feinstein was appointed head of a military building committee. In 2000 URS had $140,000 in govt contracts, in 2001 they had over $14million. Feinsteins husband is a big stock holder in URS and Pertis(?) made billions until someone made the accusation that feinstein was a war profiteer. She resigned the committee but no form of punishment was brought against her. She should be in jail, instead she was reelected. That's the kind of power she has.

Here is what zones are operating now.

PersianGulf Beginning 8/2/1990, ongoing
Somalia Beginning 9/17/1992, ongoing
Kosovo Beginning 3/24/1999, ongoing
Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom,spanningmultiple countries, beginning 10/7/2001, ongoing
OperationNew Dawn, beginning 02/17/2010, ongoing
GlobalWar on Terrorism Military expeditionsto combatterrorism, beginning 9/11/2001,
ongoing

Those that have ended recently....

Bosnia From11/21/1995 to 11/1/2007
Yugoslavia (now Bosnia‐Herzegovina) & Croatia Operations Joint Endeavor,Joint Guard, or Joint Forge, aboard U.S.Naval vessels in the Adriatic Sea, or air spaces above these areas,from 12/20/1995 to 12/2/2004

Iraq Operation Iraqi Freedom, from3/19/2003 to 2/17/2010

http://public.health.oregon.gov/BirthDeathCertificates/RegisterVitalRecords/Documents/Death/combatzonecard.pdf

The way I see it, 9 of those were ongoing from before or during the Bush administration.

I see 7 under Obama.

And I am still not convinced of the number of WW2 combat zones is simply one.

Bush inherited 6.

Obama inherited 6.

Im really not seeing your argument panning out. But moving on to the rest of your post.

Politicians are crooked. Look at Florida and the welfare drug testing. The Governor's wife's company got that contract. Interesting huh? Dont see anyone demanding he resign or be put in jail. Why? Its a popular conservative stance. Another state recently in the news has a wife who is a politician, and her hubby is the drug testing center owner. No one is batting an eye. Why arent you complaining about that as well?

I have no issues with your argument against Feinstein. She should have been investigated. Often, when they are not, its because too many other hands are equally as dirty, and that doesnt mean along party lines. But, if you are going to complain about one, dont make it sound like that is the only one.

With all due respect to dear old Ike, I've always wondered why he waited till his farewell address to raise an issue he had eight years to address.
