Barry Helps The Rebels

I whole-heartedly agree that when leaders start using chemical weapons, something needs to be done by someone. We can't just stand by or can we?

Barry on Chemical Weapons

quote:

I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons, and coveted nuclear capacity. He's a bad guy. The world, and the Iraqi people, would be better off without him.

But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States, or to his neighbors, that the Iraqi economy is in shambles ...

Yes, I know war is different than military aid but I also know that we already have a few boots on the ground in Syria. Are we headed for more? Is Assad a "imminent and direct threat to the United States"?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

We haven't any troops in Syria. It will go like Libya, no big deal, and the howling and gnashing of teeth will be great.

Too fuckin bad. At least it aint teabaggers running the show.

No, it wouldn't be like Libya. The Russians and Iranians will continue to supply weapons to the Syrian government. If America then supplies weapons to the rebels it will be a war by proxy where the Syrians are pawns in a war between Russia, Iran and America. In my opinion, to get involved at all is absolute lunacy.

DaddySatyr, are you sure it was the Syrian leaders using chemical weapons ? or are we being duped?

Iran can be dismissed out of hand. Look where stuff is happening, it will be like Libya, it will be a Nato deal, and I doubt that Russia wants to fuck around too much with so many countries. But time will tell.

Lots of luck with that one. But look at it this way. It helps to weed out the ones that are not worth paying much attention to.

True

And trust me,I was holding out no hope that my post would have any impact at all,I just feel that from time to time this point must be restated .
If only to shame the fools who ,for whatever reason, refuse to show the office any respect.

We should stay the hell out of it. All we can accomplish is to create even greater chaos and misery in place that already has too much.

President Obama has already shown the incomptence of his judgement in balancing our safety against our ideals with the NSA revelations, in Syria I expect equal or greater incompetence in balancing our ideals against our safety.

Of course, he was also the one claiming in his inaugural that such a choice was false anyway, so it shows just how woefully ignorant he was about this stuff from the start.

We should stay the funk away.
Assad is a brutal dictator. The revolutionaries are Islamic fundamentalists. Neither of them like us one whit.
WTF would we be doing there?

Of course I can't be sure, per se. My source of information in that region is no longer available to me.

I do remember that when we came up empty, looking for chemical weapons that we sold to Sadam, one of the most whispered rumors was that the weapons had found their way to Syria's government. But, at this point it's as solid as what sent us to Iraq in '03. That's why I contrasted the recent increase in supplies to Syrian rebels to what (then) Sen. Obama had to say about a similar situation.

I am not suggesting that we send troops. It's the last thing I want but, if it is true that the government (and not the rebels) is using chemical weapons (especially if they may have originated here), are we obligated to do something?

Peace and comfort,

Michael

If we have traces of the chemical weapon used, we may be able to trace it to it's source, right? Precisely why I said we should trace it in the other thread. Candidate Obama was woefully unqualified to be the President.

Hello.

You said that before. You still do not have any proof, yes? As before.

Best regards.

We have troops in Jordan, not in Syria, and as reported the number is less than 300 soldiers.

I know for a FACT that we have ... well had troops in Syria in DEC of last year.

Please show your PROOF....otherwise I'll believe my sources. As of today, there are no troops reported in Syria, only NEAR Syria. As of last December, there was an aircraft carrier NEAR Syria, that would account for reports of THOUSANDS NEAR, but zero boots on the ground.

I'm sorry I can't do that. Think what you fucking want of me but here's a thought to consider: "... an aircraft carrier NEAR Syria ..." is there any chance that maybe there were some special forces troops in country?

There were. I can't swear that there still are but I will say it, again: I know for a FACT that they were.

Then you truly don't know, unless you are posting from the area, and we are all unaware of your role in national security. As for thinking "what the fuck" I wish to think of you, I choose not think of you, only know your posts, and I don't know them well, I am rarely here.

FR,

So, we have a guy that is stating that he knows we had boots in Syria in December, and that he doesn't know if we have them there now. And, then, we have a guy who states that we only have around 300 soldiers reported to be near Syria. They go back and forth with one requiring proof, but not giving any proof that the other guy is wrong. Yeah, if there is going to be a claim, there should also be some proof, but, isn't it possible that there are reasons why someone can't just give proof or that there are unreported troops in Syria? And, that's not even the fucking point of the OP, FFS.

What does the President do? The list of issues against Hussein is a lot longer than that against Assad, right? If Obama had an issue with going after Hussein, he can't go after toppling Assad now, can he? What happens if we find out that we've had unreported boots on the ground in Syria? What does that mean, then?

I'd give 10 to 1 odds we have, or have had, forces of one flavor or another in Syria.
