LuckyAlbatross -> Serenity Now/Equality Now (6/26/2006 7:31:01 PM)

Some of you may know that I am a huge Firefly/Serenity fan.

Firefly is a show by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer guy) that got prematurely canceled by Fox, and Serenity was the movie released based on the show.

One of Joss Whedon's big charity's is called Equality Now, and is an organization which "works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure"

The fans of Serenity/Firefly moved together to have worldwide screenings of Serenity on Joss Whedons birthday and to collect money for his charity.

I was part of the Northern Virginia group's screening (although my partner did most of the work in setting it up).  The event was a huge success! The theater had sold out two days before the event and the crowd was excited. We had wanted to do raffles but didn't have enough time before the showing to make it happen. My partner was awesome as our emcee for the night and got the crowd ready to enjoy.  None of the ticket sales went to the charity, so all money was from audience donations.

We raised over $500!!!

To get info on the main event and see how much the Browncoats raised with their efforts, check out http://www.cantstoptheserenity.com/

Here are pictures from our screening last Friday:

Oooohh!  Me too!

I loves me some Firefly!!!

I can't wait for the next episode to come out....the one where Captain Dante Montana rescues his son from the Manicheans, and Lister and Rimmer finally get married, and become the away team on the Andromeda....

I'm a huge Serenity/ Firefly fan as well.  I can't believe someone didn't pick that series up.  Outlaw cowboys in space, what could be cornier or work better?

Congrats on the successful fund raiser and for sharing!  Looks like it was a blast.

LOL at least you chose other good shows to point out.

Thanks Suz, was a very awesome time, and my last NOVA event *sniffle*

Sci-Fi picked up the series to run re-runs, but I'm glad that all the actors are moving on.  I'd prefer to see Joss and the people involved become hugely successful in their own right more than seeing my favorite show continue (barely).

Congratulations on the fund raiser and kudos for taking the time you and your partner took in setting it up.

As a Joss Whedon blind follower and owner of every DVD of all three series it is nice to see another part of him and such a wonderful part as well. I will have to be on the lookout for Equality Now.
