tazzygirl -> Fetal masturbation as a reason to stop abortions? (6/19/2013 6:24:39 AM)

In the Pain Capable Uborn Child Protection Act thread, I mentioned we run the risk of politicians wanting to push back the dates to earlier than 20 weeks.

Later on, they can come back with "Well, we discovered, with the advancement of medicine, that at 2 weeks, the fetus can feel pain...."

Well, in this case, I hate being right.

It has begun

(And before I get any flack about the subject matter of this article, it was ran by the Admins first, specifically because of the subject matter)

Rep. Michael Burgess Says 15-Week-Old Male Fetuses Pleasure Themselves

“Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful,” said Burgess, a former obstetrician-gynecologist. “They stroke their face. If they’re a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to believe that they could feel pain?”

The tea party congressman, 62, made the awkward argument during a House Rules Committee hearing today about H.R. bill 1797, which would ban abortions 20 weeks after fertilization.

Burgess, who says that fetal movements can point to pleasurable sexual sensation, argues that abortion should be limited to the first 15 weeks, rather than the proposed 20.

Cleveland Dr. Lisa Perriera of University Hospitals Case Medical Center counters that a fetus’ hand between its legs is nothing more than “practicing using their muscles.”

“Three studies have been done in human fetuses to examine the development of connections between nerves,” Perriera said. “And we don’t think those connections start to form until somewhere between 23 and 30 weeks gestation.”

The congressman’s statement also raises the question of why female fetuses’ hands apparently stay above the belt, and Dr. Perriera believes she has an explanation.

“It’s all boiling down to males again,” she said, “while this legislation is targeting women and limiting women’s rights.”

I have seen articles from the 90's discussing sexual movement of a fetus as early as 30 weeks. (Dont ask how they come by that theory, its really just... too... )

But purposeful? What do you think? Is he right?

My observation is that when babies are newly born, pretty much everything they do is either instinct or by accident.
So, purposeful?
No.

I read that one yesterday Tazzy and I was going to post it, but Ive just about had it with the ignorance of plainly dumb stupid people.... republican, dem and so called independents.
Any mother knows that a child moves around and responds to stimuli from a pretty early time in the pregnancy, pain? when the synapses arent developed enough until beyond that time to actually process it.
This is the drama queen version of emotional bullying

I wonder if Mr Burgess is projecting his own desires and perversions onto the world at large.

Whats even sadder is that he is a OBGYN and spouting this nonsense.

But Burgess's argument isn't based in science, doctors say.

"We certainly can see a movement of a fetus during that time, but in terms of any knowledge about pleasure or pain - there are no data to assess," says Jeanne Conry, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a professional association for OB/GYNs. "We don't know enough about the biology and the science."

Any media reports on masturbation by fetuses can almost exclusively be traced back to a single letter written by two OB/GYNs in Italy in 1996 and published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The letter related an anecdote in which the two doctors had "recently observed a female fetus at 32 weeks gestation touching the vulva with the fingers of the right hand" before the female fetus experienced prolonged spasms, and "finally...relaxed and rested."

Conry said it was wrong to "base science on single observations."

"For whatever reason in our country when it comes to abortion we make statements based not on the science but based on observations and on emotion," she said.

Burgess, whose office did not respond to request for comment, serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he is the vice chair of the Subcommittee on Health.

I mean, really?

Oh, and I dont know if you saw this Lucy, the bill in the house was amended to include rape and incest.... but only if they are reported to the police, and incest only if the woman is a minor.
