I agree, there's no way All in the family would fly now a days.

If you cast a show with Chris Rock as the head of household it might work.

OsideGirl -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 2:47:18 PM)

We just watched a documentary on Richard Pryor. He was intent on reclaiming the N word. Then he made a trip to Africa and swore never to use the word again. It was an interesting show.

I give her credit for being honest. The south is changing, for the better, and many who used racial slurs years ago would not dream of doing it now. The generation Paula came up in was different than it is today, "normal" was different, and views about race were different. As long as someone grows and learns, I refuse to hold their past against them.

That said, I wonder, if everyone was as honest as Paula was, what would happen if we asked everyone of all colors if they had ever referred to someone of a different color in a derogatory way.

I suspect that, if this were done and everyone guilty lost their job, we would not have much of a workforce left, nor anyone to play sports, hell we would probably go back to the middle ages.

I just feel that she is being judged very harshly on something, because she refused to lie.

She's losing a job because the public got to see the real woman, the one that called another woman a "piece of pussy" and talked about holding a "southern plantation" themed wedding amongst other bad behavior. If you read the whole deposition you will not feel so warm and fuzzy about her.

I did read it Ken, did you?

Yes, the whole revolting thing.

The part where she blew off her brother sexually harassing employees and watching porn at work was particularly enlightening.

tazzygirl -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 6:34:31 PM)

Im far from sticking up for her.... but you all realize these charges stem from incidents in the 80's.... sexual harassment as a "hostile work environment" had yet to make it through the courts until 1986. Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson

By today's standards... disgusting... but by the standards of that day?

Killerangel -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 6:45:41 PM)

I thought the wedding comment was from her brother's wedding - which was held in 2007.

littlewonder -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 7:02:23 PM)

Personally I never liked her at all so no skin off my back what happens to her and I'm glad her show won't be on anymore. The way she talked always annoyed the hell out of me. It was like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 7:06:16 PM)

Never watch the Food Network anyway. If I want something to cook, I go to allrecipes.com or see if someone posted something on my FB timeline. That is how I got my lemonade pie recipe...hmmm...that sounds good for making in the morning.

tazzygirl -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 7:14:44 PM)

Most of the reports were quoted from the transcript of Deen’s May 17, 2013 testimony given in deposition to the attorney for Lisa Jackson, a Caucasian woman in her early 20’s who has filed a law suit against Paula Deen Enterprises and Deen’s brother, Bubba Hiers, alleging racism including the use of the ‘N word’, sexual harassment and infliction of emotional distress and assault while working at Uncle Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House in Savannah, Georgia from 2005 – 2010 as the General Manager.

You are correct, that was my mistake.

I remember reading an interview with Pryor where he talked about that. That's a recurring sentiment - reclaiming it or diffusing it. I guess his intentions were good. I just don't agree with his methodology.

I am SO with you, lw. I normally make it a point never to speak ill of anyone, especially behind their back. I'm breaking my code. Way too much manic personality for me. Words that come to mind; loud, braggadocios, overbearing, garish. The show is more about her than the food.

The same can be said about Julia Child or Emeril or just about any other cooking show... and that's not meant to be an insult. The personality of the chef is what the show is built around. I've met a lot of great southern cooks over the years but none of them would be very compelling to watch on television.

Right you are about that...apologies to you both. I guess I went overboard, as she so rubs me the wrong way, but that's my problem, not hers.

littlewonder -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 8:02:11 PM)

I think that's why I don't like food shows on tv so much. It's all about the the person and not the food. It's probably why I like Anthony Bourdain...you KNOW it's not really about the food but about him and his life. He says hat himself about his shows.

The only food shows I like are the ones where you don't see any persons talking about the food. It's just a show that has a background speaker while going all over the place talking about food or they cut out the image of the chef...you just basically see his/her hands doing the cooking...no voice, no face....just cooking and someone telling you "now add half cup of flour and mix.....".

Duskypearls -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 8:40:29 PM)

lw, I've never seen a cooking show w/o a personality, have you?

I love Bourdain, too. I know what you mean.

Still, that was very bad form of me to snipe about her.

littlewonder -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 11:00:08 PM)

Yes I have. I sometimes will watch the cooking shows on more obscure channels or public television where all it is is an over-voice as someone prepares something. The person who you don't see is talking in a bit of a monotone voice and just following along with what the person is doing step by step. It's basically a how-to video. There's no personality or anything like that...just step by step explanation.

Duskypearls -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 11:04:43 PM)

I was not aware such a thing existed.

jlf1961 -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/23/2013 11:09:20 PM)

First, while I like good food, I personally feel that her recipes are beyond unhealthy.

I really dont like her attitude, it seems that she is speaking down to her audience.

Finally, I would not put her racist comments past her, she is clearly of the "old" south mentality.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Paula oh Paula! (6/25/2013 8:00:33 AM)

I find this entire thing to be as much a set back for race relations as what Paula said.

Is it just me or is this woman a cunt and a half.

Wendy Williams

Yup, usually you can find them on on Sunday afternoons on public tv channels or the more obscure paid tv channels.
