The Edward J. Snowden case makes the USA look like a bad guy. It makes us look secretive, into coverups, and against free speech, public discourse, and individual rights. If we press hard on the National Security issue -- we lose the ability to press other states from cracking down on individual dissenters in the name of national security.

This is the third Snowden thread. I wonder how many more there are or will be added.

The United States government is secretive, manipulative, and generally paranoid, it has been since Nixon.

I mean look at the lunatics that voted them into office!

I would not trust me, and I have known me all my life, although there was that period when I disappeared for a while and I did not know what me was doing or where me was.

The is pretty good evidence that it started way before him.

Johnson was no better than Nixon.
The Spanish American War was fought over a faulty boiler in the Maine.
And that isn't even mentioning the treatment of the Indians.
That said we have never before gotten answers like
"what difference does it make" Clinton
and
"why are you upset, we've been doing it a long time" Harry Reed

Well, at least Clinton and Reed at telling a bit of truth in those statements. The answer to Clinton's rhetorical "what difference does it make" is that it makes little to no difference because Reed's statement is spot on.

Actually, the current theory is there was a fire in the compartment adjacent to the magazine, and the metal bulkhead got hot enough to trigger an explosion on the Maine.

Yes and wasn't it a fire in the boiler room?

I believe the fire was either in a rope locker or a storage room. It was on one of the history channel shows dealing with stuff like the JFK assassination, the st. valintines day massacre etc.

I will try to find the link on youtube and send it to you.

I'll take your word for it, your info is more recent than mine.
My point was that the sinking of the Maine had nothing to do with the Spanish.
Both your info and mine supports that view.

I think it was a coal storage bunker that lit it all off. The navy still disputes it's own findings. Reason being' this data was availale then. To admit it now would be to admit culpability in starting a war of agrandisement.

What difference does it make now?

Well, if you were one of the guys given a desk job for failure to go along with the coverup - I'd say it matters.
If you were the parents of one of the slain guys, I think you'd like those who did it held accountable.
If you were one of the people in the Libyan intelligence network - that was ENTIRELY rolled up because secret documents were left unsecured - and if you died as a result of it - well I think it would matter.
If we were trying to buy back anti-aircraft weapons from al-qaida afiliates - as alleged and all that data goes missing - well I think it matters.
If you happen to care about transparency bald faced lies matter. (clapper saying under oath that no americans were having calls taped. Holder saying he didn't participate in the decision. the under secretary saying only stylistic modifications were made to the cia talking points.... Hold people accountable or they will lie again.

And regarding the NSA scandals
We have never had every conversation, every internet posting saved for review by NSA agents, acting without warrants. As it was admitted happened more than 10,000 times in the current administration.

No, not 10,000 times - billions of times.

They save everything. They just don't LOOK at content without FISA approval.

So they claim.

It doesn't matter if Clinton left the ambassador unprotected because NSA has been listening to Americans for a long time?
What flavor koolaid do you like?

I think it was just prior to and about the turn of the century when the US govt. was pretty much in bed with the oligarchs of the time.

I hasten to quite disagree.

"2007 court records indicate that the Bush-Cheney administration began such surveillance at least 7 months prior to 9/11.
The Bush administration bypassed the law requiring such actions to be authorized by FISA court warrants, the body set up in the Seventies to oversee Executive Branch spying powers after abuses by Richard Nixon. Former QWest CEO John Nacchios said that at a meeting with the NSA on February 27, 2001, he and other QWest officials declined to participate. AT&T, Verizon and Bellsouth all agreed to shunt customer communications records to an NSA database.

The above included everything we discuss today.
