Documents Show Liberals in I.R.S. Dragnet

WASHINGTON — The instructions that Internal Revenue Service officials used to look for applicants seeking tax-exempt status with “Tea Party” and “Patriots” in their titles also included groups whose names included the words “Progressive” and “Occupy,” according to I.R.S. documents released Monday.

The documents appeared to back up contentions by I.R.S. officials and some Democrats that the agency did not intend to single out conservative groups for special scrutiny. Instead, the documents say, officials were trying to use “key word” shortcuts to find overtly political organizations — both liberal and conservative — that were after tax favors by saying they were social welfare organizations.

Yup the Obama administration is out to target conservative political groups.

Kind of puts a new spin on things.

The fact of the matter is political groups are not eligible for tax exempt status while social welfare groups are. The "tea party" and "conservative" groups have been masking themselves, for years, as social welfare groups while most of their money has been going into political races. This past election, the IRS saw a huge increase in such organizations of all persuasions and refused to rubber stamp the applications for tax exempt status. We heard about the "tea party" and "conservative" groups first for 2 reasons: 1) they tend to complain the loudest when they don't get their way and 2) there were far more applications from the right wing.

Gosh, what a surprise.

Hillwilliam -> RE: And yet another IRS scandal surfaces.... (6/24/2013 8:41:36 PM)

The strange thing of it all is that the only people who were denied tax exempt status were a couple of liberal groups but it was the Conservatives doing all the whining.

Conservatives like to paint themselves as "manly" and they like to paint liberals as "namby pamby little tofu eating girly men" but NOBODY can outwhine a Neocon.

erieangel -> RE: And yet another IRS scandal surfaces.... (6/24/2013 9:47:36 PM)

The fact that the conservative groups were even looked at closely must have been enough to cause the claim of them being targeted.

DaddySatyr -> RE: And yet another IRS scandal surfaces.... (6/24/2013 9:48:54 PM)

C.Y.O.A. Both sides do it and this is no real surprise.

kdsub -> RE: And yet another IRS scandal surfaces.... (6/24/2013 10:07:52 PM)

I do wonder why Lois Lerner did not just tell the committee this...Now the Republicans will have every right to say the new revelations are a contrivance by the Obama administration...dumb as hell and it is suspicious under the circumstances.

If it is true and as reported the Republican tax-exempt groups far outnumbered the Democratic groups then that would explain in a fair keyword search why more Republican groups than Democratic ones were targeted. Why the hell not just tell it like it was...why all the secrecy and 5th amendments...there should have been nothing to incriminate anyone if the so called truth came out.

No new scandal, no new spin. Americans were being targeted by the IRS based on their political leanings. Actual liberals, the sort that don't change their values in accordance with the Daily Kos talking points of the day and the contortions necessary to keep President Obama's balls in their mouths, may be even more disgusted by the conduct of this administration than the Tea-types.

well,.. O'Reilly had a whole bunch of them conservative groups on his show, each telling their story.. some had waited 3 years for their tax exempt status to be approved (& are still waiting), some are suing also.. So, I guess it just depends on what "news" you get.. and no, i dont watch him/his channel very often, pretty rarely actually.. I just dont like watching the other news channels and hearing about the latest crime and who was killed and how, just too gory for me.. [:o]

It's amazing how cons lose their love of the rule of law when they are the ones breaking them.

The simple fact is all these groups violate the clear black letter of the law. They only get approved because of a decades old "interpretation" of the law that actually completely changes what Congress intended.

The actual law
quote:

Civic leagues or organizations not organized for profit but operated exclusively for the promotion of social welfare, or local associations of employees, the membership of which is limited to the employees of a designated person or persons in a particular municipality, and the net earnings of which are devoted exclusively to charitable, educational, or recreational purposes.

Phydeaux -> RE: And yet another IRS scandal surfaces.... (6/25/2013 12:37:06 AM)

The IRS release is just spin.
Previous data reports show that the monitored groups were more than five times likely to be conservative. Several conservative groups reorganized with liberal names and got their exempt status in three weeks, without burdensome questionaires.

So no, Heretic, the issue here is the selective application of the laws (in the first place). And secondly ridiculous election-law whose primary intent is to protect incumbents.

And no, heretic, not all the groups violated the clear letter of the law. Many of the groups that you derided were solely organized for an educational basis. Which is a permitted activity for a c(4). They handed out copies of the US constitution and meetings for people to learn about the constitution. And while you may not like the results of that it is nonetheless a valid educational purpose.

jlf, it looks like they targeted anyone who they disagreed with including any useful idiots who might have voted for them.
Do you really think "The Obama Administration" is going to actually "do" anything about the IRS?
President Pantload won't even talk about it or Bengazzi or the state dept mess or the NSA or about harrassing A.P. and Fox News reporters!
But I'm sure Pantload will tell you he believes in a "free press!"
You don't do the kind of stuff the IRS did unless someone at the top of the ladder told you to. Why would a "Rogue Agent" do something so dangerous and risk prison and termination?

That's precisely what Conservatives have been complaining about for decades regarding Liberals and Progressives and their interpretations of the US Constitution.

Only when it doesn't support your cause, eh, Ken?
