Daddy is terrified of the dentist because as a kid he had a tooth that had died or something and the dentist was like well it's dead you won't feel a thing no need for novacain , and he yanked it true to his word with no pain killers no nothing an the root was barbed and it hurt really bad, he has no real memory of anything after the pain but he says his mom says she could hear him screaming all the way in the lobby..

So now he would rather let all his teeth rot out an live with it before going to the dentist. and if he has to go, he refuses to go to one that won't do sedation.

dear gawd people, Im feeling all your pain and then some, I had horrible experiences as a kid, and adult, but when I had my wisdom teeth out with laughing gas, as he pulled one out, it flipped out of the forceps, hit the operating light above my face and hit the nurse right on the tit so hard she jumped back, spilling stuff all over the floor, I laughed so hard I peed myself, literally, I didnt stop laughing for five minutes, but I still hate the dentists.
I also had a needle go thru to the outside, while he was working on one of my front top four, the needle didnt go into the gum, it came up over the bone and came out in the crease of my nostril/top lip, I could see the needle ....freaked me right the hell out.
PS dental care is not free in Ontario,

In 1977, I was 12 years old and had braces. The wire broke off from the braces amid the black out that covered the East Coast.

In the middle of that, I got to walk to the dentist, with the wire end embedded in a bit of apple to keep it from boring through my cheek. The local dentist cut it and I walked home.

A couple of days later, I finally got to the orthodontist who bitched about all the extra work he had to do because I refused to suffer with it.
This after he refused to let me come in when it broke because it was almost quitting time.

Talk about assholes.

Damn I need to get my wisdom teeth out, and after reading this thread I am thoroughly terrified. Can you insist on sedation?

FR

I got mine pulled through a dental school, and it cost me $10 per tooth. I had insurance, which covered the sedation, but I think it was $100 without it. Thank goodness for morphine!

Absolutely cannot praise my dentist enough. Couple years younger than me... his pain management skills are nothing short of exemplary.

But I, as all Marine recruits, have their wisdom teeth removed prophylactically compliments of the Naval dentists at MCRD Parris Island. THAT was a different story.

I have 3 of the 4 wisdom teeth, the one broke....it took more time for the novacaine to go into effect than it did to pull the tooth. I felt the dentist push up on the tooth, and it simply slid right out.

I am a total wuss at the dentist.....the guy we used growing up was nothing more than a butcher...he made the dentist in LSOH look like a baby. The last two teeth I had pulled were done by a total idiot. I was a last minute appointment to the office, and when the jerk got me in the chair, he gave me like 2 little squirts of novacaine in each cheek at the gumline, then let me sit there for 35 minutes. He grabbed on tot he one tooth, and after he peeled me off the ceiling, meted out another miniscule amount of novacaine, then proceeded to pull the other tooth w/o any more novacaine. If he hadn't put those dental blocks in, I would've bitten him just for the hell of it.

For whatever reason, even that time, I have never felt any pain afterwards. There is usually enough novacaine used to completely numb my entire face, and the dentist gives me the rx for painkillers, which I fill just in case, but ibuprofen always worked. I kept the drugs for sleep. Even after my appendectomy, I only used the good stuff for 2 days, then switched to ibuprofen.

Needless to say, no matter how much the dentist insists, I refuse to do root canals and crowns.....by the time I get to a dentist, the tooth is busted or cracked around the filling. Once the pain goes away, I don't go to the dentist. One of the teeth I had pulled the last time was the ground down stump for a crown. It cracked again and got unbearable. I'll just have the tooth pulled and be done with it.
