Abd how do you set it so you customize the things running in the back ground at boot up, not the pc.

I know you can do that for a desk top, someone told me how once, can it be done for a laptop?

littlewonder -> RE: how do you rid your lap top of factory bloat ware that might be cluttering up things? (6/26/2013 6:13:21 PM)

you do it the same way as a desktop.

ARIES83 -> RE: how do you rid your lap top of factory bloat ware that might be cluttering up things? (6/26/2013 6:31:24 PM)

I can understand how this might be confusing, someone I know bought a new laptop recently, had better specs than my old desktop, but ran slow as shit, they aparently had to use a App removal tool to get rid of all the junk apps... Windows 8 i think... This method shouldn't mess with any driver packs or anything.

LW,
With a desktop I'd just format but often laptops seem to require factory drivers and the like to operate the specific cams, trackpads, wifi, sound systems and whatever else they cram into them. Couple that with the junk app bundles that sometimes get foisted upon buyers, it's often confusing.

I'm no laptop expert but I am an expert at being confused by laptops...[;)]

If you really don't know how and you don't know how to clean things like hidden ware then your best bet is to take it to a shop and have them remove it. It will probably cost you around $75 to $100 depending on how bad it is. If you try to do it yourself and you don't know what files are what, then you take the chance of deleting vital files.

You can also take it to Staples where they will run a check on it and tell you what is on it. After that they charge to remove stuff. I have no idea what they charge though. I'm betting around $100.

If you bought it at a "major retailer" they usually have some type of computer support service and often that stuff is free for the first 30 days.

I would take it back where you purchased it and ask them.

If you want a completely clean laptop with only the software that you want on it then the best solution it to reformat and start from scratch. But I do not recommend this for someone who does not understand that a desktop and a laptop are essentially the same thing in a different package.

Step 1: Find, create, or order a set of factory restore discs. Many computers today do not come with a set of restore discs - you must make a set yourself through a utility that was pre-installed at the factory. Alternately, you can buy an OEM copy of the OS you want. Windows 8 is the current flavor from Microsoft and 8.1 is being previewed. You can also still buy Windows 7. Be sure to get the version (32- or 64-bit) that is right for your computer.

Step 2: Go to the mfg's website and download the latest drivers for the Chipset, Video, and Network. Save these to a CD, DVD, or thumb drive. Look for s BIOS update while you're at it and install the before starting the re-install process.

Step 3: Save anything you have created to a CD, DVD, or thumbdrive. This means any documents, spreadsheats, pictures, music, videos, etc that you caused to be on the computer. If you do not do this they will all be lost. Copy the My Favorites folder while you're at it.

Step 4: Using the Restore Disc or the OEM disc, boot your computer to the disc and begin the install process. If using the Restore discs, the correct drivers will be installed for you but I still recommend getting the laterst ones form the mfg site. If using an OEM disc, you will need to add the drivers from the mfg site. Install the Chipset driver 1st, then the video, then the LAN. This will get you a basic, working install. From there you can add other drivers as needed (audio, web cam, etc).

Note that in either case you must select the option at the beginning of the process that will reformat/wipe out the existing hard drive.

Step 5: Copy in any files you saves in Setp 3.

Step 6: Install any applications you need (Anti-virus, office productivity, Adobe Reader, Flash Player, Java, etc...).

Or you can pay someone to do this for you. I charge from $100 up depending on how much data must be saved, if I have to create the Restore discs, and how many apps I must re-install. The work is not very difficult but it IS time-consuming.

Best of luck,

~Dave

This won't help with factory bloatware, but I run CCleaner about twice a week and usually get rid of about 500 MB of crap each time.

(Make sure you click Download latest version and not the ads for other programs.)

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

Cleans the following:
Internet Explorer
Firefox
Google Chrome
Opera
Safari
Windows - Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files.
Registry cleaner
Third-party applications
100% Spyware FREE

FR~

I have used CCleaner several times on various PC's and every single time it has deleted stuff that was supposedly "safe" and completely fucked up the machine to the point where I had no choice but to flat-line it and do a complete re-install.

Personally, as Dave said, I would grab all the necessary drivers from the manufacturer website, and all your personal files like music, pics etc and save them all and start with a clean OEM copy of the software so there's no other crap with it.
Buying a restore disc will have it just like when it was sold - with all the bloatware they package with the OS for retail sale.

Or alternatively, take it to a shop to get all that crap removed.

ETA: a laptop is no different to any other pre-built desktop machine (HP, Dell etc).
It's just housed in a different style of box.
Each machine will have it's own set of drivers etc but they can be treated in exactly the same way.

I've been using this since 2005 and haven't had any problems on many machines. I pretty much use the default options but do uncheck "recently typed URLs." Do you remember if you were you mucking around in the Advanced Options?

I'm not a newbie to computers. and probably been using them since waaay before most on here were even born.
I build my own machines so I know pretty much what I'm doing where software is concerned.

I have tried it on several machines here over the last couple of years and it always fucked them up completely.
And I do mean completely! It usually results in the OS not booting next time round and isn't recoverable.
That said, I never have everything in the usual places so in that respect it's a non-standard install.
Maybe it works when everything is installed out of the box.
It doesn't work with a custom install; that I do know - to my cost.

I was going to rip on CCleaner for how destructive it can be on the registry but I haven't touched it in years so it may have improved somewhat. I learned a long time ago that it's generally not a good idea to let someone else do your work for you. Even when it comes to a virus I prefer a manual method of deletion before using an AV for cleaning - I like to know what changes are being made and why.

I've also been using Ccleaner for years without any ill effect. However, I have to say it's never made a noticeable difference to the speed or efficiency of any machine of mine, either.

Oh what a fun topic
Ok let me suggest a few things

1.http://www.blackviper.com/ The Man, The Myth, The Legend best place in the world to find out what's running on your computer and how to tweak it.
2.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx Microsoft's Process Explorer one of their best free programs. It shows you what processes are running on your computer/
3.http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner CCleaner makes sure clean your computer up and gives it that fresh lemony smell (LOL)
4.http://portableapps.com/ a handy load of apps, tools etc that come in handy and since they don't run on your hard drive are excellent when trying to eliminate bloat.
5.http://www.nirsoft.net/ some of the best written software, best networking tools out there today.
6. I didn't put the link to this because its a cracked hacker tool, but there is a program called MRI which was created by GEEK Squad, which has been cracked by a bunch of hackers called SoldierX. Geek Squad doesn't actually repair anything, they come to your home put MRI into the drive and let the CD do the work and then charge you BIG MONEY for something the CD does. If you want to try to find this tool that's on you but it comes in handy.

CCleaner is a cleaner, not an optimizer. It will get rid of the crap on the machine but its not going to make it faster

Oh I remember when I got my little net book spent 7 days cleaning it, removing viruses, Trojans, dialers, spyware and the crap. What a fun Seven days! I really love cleaning up an abused computer and making it run right!

Any of these work for Macs? My beloved machine is slowing down, alas.
