LW, make the flight attendant aware of your condition and ask if there is an empty seat in business or first class; there is usually more room there to move about. Also, ask to be seated on an outside aisle near the bathroom and make it a point to get up frequently to use it, whether it's just splashing your face or washing your hands. It's really important that you move around frequently during the flight.

You're smart not to attempt the kneeling pose while you're in pain. None of the postures are supposed to hurt. It can wait until the leg elevations reduce the swelling. While you're traveling, a great way to do that is what my yoga teacher calls the instant Maui:

Lie on the floor and bend your legs over the seat of a chair that faces you. The rest is the same as legs-at-the-wall.

Wishing you good health!

Ok, so finally back from my trip to Dallas. Thankfully on my trip to Dallas I had a seat with lots of leg room so I was able to stretch out my legs and do so ankle and foot exercises while sitting. And then on my way home, because it was the day before Independence Day and I'm government, I was bumped up to first class and had again, lots of leg room. That was really nice.

I tried to make sure to keep my legs elevated and wear my compression socks while I was at work there. I still had some swelling though and the electric shocks in my entire body just got worse and worse while there to the point where once the day was over all I could do was go back to the hotel room, put my legs up and sleep. I slept the entire time I was there when I wasn't working. So I basically did not get to do any sight seeing whatsoever which sucked.

Now that I'm back home, the electric shock feelings are so bad that I'm nauseous and I have zilch energy. All I have been doing is sleeping. The moment I even stand up and walk just a few feet, I feel as if I'm going to pass out. Thankfully I have my dr's appointment again on Monday and I don't have to go back to work until then. This whole feeling is fucking getting to me to the point I'm frustrated to tears.

Oh, I've also started taking aspirin thinking maybe they might help? Any thoughts on that? The doc said I don't have any heart problems, but I"m thinking it might help with the circulation?

Oh, and I did the epsom salt soak tonight and it really helped me feel better while I was in the tub. But I was right back to where I was before, about an hour later after getting out of the tub. I'm going to continue to do the epsom salt soaks every night though and hopefully eventually they will continue to work more and more.

Ok, so I thought I should come back to give the results of my blood work and return doctor's appointment.

Turns out I have an under-active thyroid but I have had three tests done in the past three years and I have been told I'm fine. Now with this last one by a different doctor being done because I felt like I couldn't rely on my regular doctor, he said I have an under-active thyroid and my cholesterol is a little over the normal points but nothing he's concerned about. I've never had that either. It's all really strange to me.

So I want to get my cholesterol back to normal by paying more attention to my diet and the doc gave me Synthroid for the thyroid. I have to go back in two months and have blood work taken again to see if there are any changes.

I only just started taking the med today so we'll see over time what happens.

the reason excercise helps with the VI is the veins in the sole of the foot help to pump the blood back up to the heart. VI can resolve if the cause is corrected. some times tha cause is the valves in the veins that fail causing the swelling or a nutriens deficency ect compression socks do suck but are a godsend to keep thing where it should be. keep track of the blood tests and follow up with the dr.

Dang, hearing stuff like this pisses me off all over again. I am now a firm believer in 2nd...and 3rd...opinions. In my case, four discounted my belief and after years of poking, prodding, cutting, pasting, injecting...turns out I was right all along and didn't need most of the surgery and organ removal they did. That's why they call it 'practicing medicine', the f*ckers. [&:]

I'm glad you're on the right track now, LW. Thanks for the update. Please continue to keep us posted.

I have one pair right now and I try to remember to wear them but I'm usually in a rush in the morning to get out the door for work since I leave at 5:30am so I don't always remember until I get to work and my legs start to ache.

I just can't imagine living my life like this and hurting all the time and never being able to go hiking anymore or do much of any kind of walking and always feeling like I'm going to pass out.

I was doing some research online about VI and I read there are some surgeries that can be done but they are rarely done. But ya know...if they make me live a normal life again, I'll pay for it myself if I have to. [&o]

Yes, I'm frustrated and grumpy and in pain tonight and Master is out of town so I don't have him to listen to my frustration right now.

There are compression stockings as well. Perhaps not the best news in the summer, but by fall you may want them.
They cost around $30.
A good friend says they kept her from quitting work.
I'll try to find out where she gets them.
Feel better.

Just curious how you are doing with this, LW...

DesFIP -> RE: venous insufficiency (8/19/2013 8:54:10 AM)

Buy a wedge shaped foam and put it under the mattress at the foot of the bed. Elevate the mattress and your feet will also be elevated.

Or a couple of four by four blocks under the feet of the bed to raise it.

kiwisub12 -> RE: venous insufficiency (8/19/2013 2:31:14 PM)

Sounds like the advice given to nursing students when I first started - because of feet swelling. Made me smile.

littlewonder -> RE: venous insufficiency (8/19/2013 7:42:50 PM)

I'm doing better with my legs somewhat thanks! I went to the doc who did some blood tests and it came out that I have an underactive thyroid so now I'm on meds. He's still not convinced it's what is causing the issues with my legs but they don't swell as often unless it's really hot outside. I still get some pain in my right leg however when I walk. I've pretty much given up on it ever going away though and am just learning to live with it by elevating my legs, paying attention to when I realize I have had enough and I need to sit down or get up and walk or whatever.

I'm just chalking my aches and pains these days to getting old and just dealing with them the best I can since I'm tired of seeing doctor after doc who really have no answers for me or think it's all in my head.

LeatherBentOne51 -> RE: venous insufficiency (9/14/2013 6:09:34 PM)

I have very similar problems with venous inefficiency. I also have cardiac issues. My cardiologist used ultrasound and found that the valves in my vessels of the lower leg either don't close or leak. This means once the blood flows to my feet, it back flows returning to the heart and the blood pools around the ankles and in the lower legs when returning to the heart. It can be very painful, almost debilitating. You may want to see a cardiologist for an ultrasound. I was given medication and it works like a charm. Unfortunately, I've had to at least temporarily stop taking as one of my cardiac medicines was doubled due to extremely rapid and an irregular heart beat which from what I understand is not related to the venous inefficiency.

Feel free to contact me on the other side if I can be of greater help. Take care of yourself and be well.

littlewonder -> RE: venous insufficiency (9/15/2013 6:38:37 PM)

I've had my heart tested. Completely healthy. I still have the leg issues and yeah...debilitating at times. Hurts like hell. I'm just learning to live with it and hoping one day to at least find some shoes that will at least help a bit more.

But thank you for that bit of advice. My doc had already thought of that and why he gave me the heart tests.

DrMaster4U2 -> RE: venous insufficiency (10/12/2013 2:38:53 AM)

The pressure is higher in the deeper parts of the ocean than on the surface.
The pressure is higher near the bottom of your legs than nearer to the heart.
If you're overweight the pressure is even higher. If you're pregnant - it may be higher still. If you're diabetic your veins are already compromised.
Blood vessels start to leak when the collagen holding the cells of veins together is not given it's proper due - nutrition (food)
Collagen needs Vitamin C (buffered), Bioflavonoids, Calcium, Vitamin D, good fatty acid, vitamin K and other nutrients. Collagen is compromised in certain conditions - including high blood sugar. Genetics has very little to do with it. Familial traits much more. Birth and other traumas are involved also.
Best thing: learn to SQUAT - bring your knees higher than your abdomen during a bowel movement and that reduces the (valsalva) pressure on the legs. Eat foods with lots of vitamin C and bioflavonoids. Use the stockings at night and raise the foot portion of your bed by an inch or two. Lose the weight. Quit the caffeine. Increase fiber intake by eating more fruit and less fruit juice. Steam your vegetables. Make a large smoothie in the morning.
Hope this helps.
