Status: offline 		I want to pop up a wall, but not go the crazy drywall do everything method. I seem to remember when I bought my house, there was a wall that was essentially framing and some sort of sheeting nailed to it.
i figure,you guys are definetely smarter than me and I wonder does anyone 1) know what the heck Im talking about and 2) know ifit has a title or a better way to explain it?
also does anyone know what wood thats treated so itcan get wet is called?

Status: offline 		Hmm, just about any wood sealed with a water proofing coating will be.. Err, waterproof haha.
I use tung oil for craft projects, but there are hardcore sealants you can get as well, just ask your hardware store.

Status: offline 		Try using the term "non bearing wall" or "non load bearing" and
search using Google.  Basically that is the term for a wall that
does not hold up the ceiling on top of it.  It is a partition that
does not carry a load.

One type of wood that is going to be exposed to moisture is
"pressure treated".  It is construction lumber that has chemical
preservatives in it.  You have to be careful cutting and handling it.

Status: offline 		The problem with the instant walls like I think you're talking about is if you don't live in a warm area, if there is no insulation, you're gonna have problems from the cold and if you are doing a basement you will have to make sure the back walls are waterproofed or you will have mold issues, unless you buy the type that I linked to that basically has it all included in one but you will pay a lot more for it than just doing it the old fashioned way.

I've done drywall walls before and they're really not hard at all...just messy from having to mud and sand down but otherwise all it is is a frame, sheets of insulation and dryboard nailed to the frame.

Status: offline 		When you ask PART of a question, and leave folks to use their ESP to figure out what you mean, you are not very likely to get a useful answer.

I suggest you ask the rest of the question, or hire a local contractor with both license and bond and show him or her the job.

Status: offline 		i think the first thing you need to ask yourself is not can you do it but what is your budget. If you are pressed for cash then perhaps there are some inexpensive methods for putting up a wall. Also what do you intend to do in the area you wall off (does it need to be sound proof or just to divide a space from another space?) Once you have a general idea here of those two questions perhaps I can offer some help here having built a house and done a lot of interior work building recording studios as well as finishing basements etc.

Status: offline 		I just want to put a semipermanentdivider up, sorta hiding my office area when you walk through.
I hate spending lots of money, I kinda like that wall maria linked.the temperature is fairly constant here, so Im not worried too much about anything happening to the wall,nor does it need to insulate

Maybe you can get your desired effect by setting up the two "rooms" so as to divide them. Or, maybe you install a giant bookshelf/ built in or two instead of a wall. You can put all kinds of stuff on it, so it becomes more of a showcase/ storage/ decoration vehicle than just something else to have to dress up, as a wall would be. If it's not load-bearing, you have tons of options.

Status: offline 		well if you just want to block off an office area and dont need it sound proofed or even always closed off the cheapest thing I can think of is to hang venetian blinds (they do make some nice wood ones) and then have them fixed at the floor you can then have them open or closed depending on the situation and they can eventually be raised if you dont fix them permenantly to the floor just be sure to measure out the height and width you will need. If you want them more fixed you could use some aluminum track to have the blinds slip in as a channel using aluminum studs are cheap and will do fine. But that would make them more permenant until you remove the studs.

Status: offline 		I would just buy some tall bookcases and line them up to create a wall, then use a folding screen (easy to make it yourself) for the "doorway" so you could have it "open" or "closed".. I am not quite understanding the "getting wet/waterproof" part tho..

Then I suggest stone, granite is my first choice, about 18 inches thick by 18 tall by 24 long. Neat thing is that it would be sound proof.
