Well...it might possibly turn the gluteus maximas to a gluteus minimus. [8D]

All poorly delivered jokes aside, here is a link that weighs some of the pros and cons.

I am not sure what the benefits may be, but I'd ask a nutritionist first before starting this diet, especially since eliminating foods with gluten often means eliminating foods with whole grains, essential vitamins and fiber, which are crucial to maintaining a balanced diet.

I believe it is just a protein in wheat barley and a few other grains as well as various other foods in small amounts. It can cause problems because it is hard to digest and some people it can damage their intestines and be life threatening. But for most it is not a worry nor does if have a benefit if consumed.

The percentage of people with a gluten intolerance or having celiac disease is quite high and I believe the only reason you're seeing "gluten-free" everywhere nowadays is that more people are becoming aware.

If you do not have any form of gluten intolerance, then products containing gluten are neither bad for you or necessary. At least that's what I heard and I'm not a nutritionist.

I have not been tested for celiac but does run in my family. After cutting gluten, many symptoms suddenly disappeared.

What symptoms?

I suggest talking to your doctor, or try webmd.

A doctor is your best bet.

jlf I think she'd be ok with it but I was asking shy what symptoms she had go away,

You can be intolerant to something without being actually allergic to it. I gain weight quickly when I eat a lot of flour products, more than just the calories alone would indicate.

Did you see the Food Allergy Diet; Elimination/Challenge Diet posts in the Eliminating foods from your diet thread?

MariaB -> RE: Is there any benifit to eating gluten free if you don;t have to? (6/28/2013 6:58:19 AM)

It certainly doesn't hurt to eliminate things like wheat from your diet.

I'm a diagnosed celiac sufferer, which means I get sick if I eat glutens but like kalikshama said, many people deal with asymptomatic varieties of wheat intolerance.

I eat huge quantities of food to try and keep weight on but none of those foods have glutens in them. For me, once I stopped eating glutens, amongst other things, I stopped having brain fog, random mood swings and bouts of depression.

Would I eat glutens if I could? probably not. The problem is, things such as wheat are exceptionally addictive because of the high levels of Glutamic acid, a natural flavour enhancer which drives us to consume more of the same. Its a stodge food that doesn't make us feel full.

Coming off glutens is fairly tough at first because you have to re-educate your entire diet plan. So many things you don't expect to contain glutens do :( and gluten free products are fairly expensive if you don't get food prescriptions. Cutting down is probably a better option.

I had several that disappeared. The major ones that caused me to go to a doctor were painful stomach issues (no need to go into details there), couldn't lose weight no matter how hard I tried, irregular periods (like only 2 a year), and fatigue. After going to a few doctors, and no knowledge of gluten myself, I gave up and started to accept these symptoms as normal for me.
When a family member showed me about celiac, it just made sense.
I stopped consuming gluten and everything improved. Significantly.
The family member that was diagnosed had the same issues. She went in demanding they test for celiac no matter how much they argued with her and the test came back positive. That's good enough for me.

Yup, That's all that counts.

The problem with the 'Celiac test' is, you can't have it if your not eating glutens and even if you are eating glutens when you have the test, it tends to show a lot of false negatives. A negative result doesn't mean you don't have 'Celiac disease' or that your not gluten intolerant. I had 3 tests over a period of two years and the first two were false negatives.

OsideGirl -> RE: Is there any benifit to eating gluten free if you don;t have to? (6/28/2013 9:56:23 AM)

The answer is....it depends.

Buying gluten free products in the store - not really. They tend to be higher in calories and sugar. A friend who had to go gluten free found that out the hard way after gaining 20lbs.

Following a gluten free diet without buying pre-packaged/processed foods - probably, because it cuts simple carbs and would fall under the "Paleo" or "Primal" diet area. http://thepaleodiet.com/

Yes, I can agree with this. I've said in the past, cutting Gluten gave me the ability to lose weight but cutting processed foods out made it fall off.

I don't visit the gluten-free aisle very often because they're still all processed foods and I'm not entirely confident all of those items are truly gluten-free. I think sometimes, also, some may hear the term gluten-free and think it's a healthier and lower-calorie way to eat...which is not really the case...leading them to consume the same amount, if not more, empty-calorie snacks.

So these likely wouldn't be as great for you as they'd want to claim?

In that particular case, they're about the same.

That said, you shouldn't be eating bread anyway. It's 18g of simple carbs per slice. So, two slices eat up a large chunk of your carb allowance for the day, it's not even a good carb. It will spike your blood sugar.

If you're going to be doing bread, you should be doing something like this: http://www.julianbakery.com/bread-product/smart-carb-1/

Yay OsideGirl, it just so happens that company sells bread locally right across the street from Daddy's work!
