This was not My brain storm but was such a neat thing that I had to share it. As I've mentioned on other threads, we're having what Alaskan's consider a heat wave. When we're hitting temps** in the mid 90's, that's pretty close to as hot as it gets here. In addition, the air quality has been rather poor due to over a hundred wildfires across the region and even some extra pollution from some volcanic eruptions. It's tough on people. It's even harder on the wildlife. Particularly with so any moose calves being born in the mid May - mid June time frame. One of our neighbors a couple of houses down came up with a great idea for a moose fountain. Basically, they stuck a garden hose into the four foot high chain link fence so the water would come out at an upward angle to enable the moose to get a fresh cool drink. Earlier tonight, we saw a cow moose with her young calf taking advantage of the opportunity for clean water. I thought it was a very neat and thoughtful idea. I just wanted to share a feel good thread. ** Just to be clear, the post is being written referring to degrees in Fahrenheit.

Sounds like a great idea.. Sorry about the wildfires, I had nothing to do with them, I swear on a stack of bibles that I didnt do it.... Now, the volcanoes I may or may not be responsible for. You see I am trying to figure out a way to get the Lake toba supervolcano to erupt in such a fashion as to start a new ice age. It will have to be a larger eruption than it has done in the past, because I want to have ski resorts in Costa Rica with a 6 foot snow base by 2016. Now if it was my arcane techniques that caused the two present eruptions, then another three should start in about a week, plus a couple of the bigger Icelandic volcanoes.

another idea is to put a large tub like a old laundy tub up on a milk crate and fill with water and ice . just dont let the athorities see it as it could be seen as baiting the moose and that is against the state law(baiting is the practice of placing food, salt blocks ao other attractant items to get the moose to frequent the area)

We did get some shots but they haven't been transferred from the camera to the computer yet. Being the technology twit that I am, that is MP's department. I'm not sure how well people will be able to see the calf. The four foot high chain fence goes around everybody's yard in the back, so the little guy might be somewhat obscured. He's wasn't even tall enough to get his face above that. Weeks old at most. The cow moose, on the other hand, was huge. Bigger than the one that I got the shot of by the neighbor's house.

So ladypact ignored my confession, good, now she too believes I am crazy and when the next ice age starts, everyone will think it was purely a natural phenomenon.

How cool! Although its crazy that ninety is a heat wave. I STILL TOTALLY WANT TO SEE A MOOSE DRINK FROM THE HOSE!

(However, I think there should be a reasonable charge for this...whatever a moose can pay).

Anything above 70F is considered positively hot here. If the weather freaks and reaches above 80F it's a scorching heatwave. Above 90F and it's soooo rare that it gets noted in the history books!! [:D] But.... The winters are usually so mild that snow for more than a day or two is also rare. It's usually just wet and cold (hovering at or just above freezing). Boring temperate weather. lol.

The method obviously works. She's back. She had a drink at her fountain and then went for some leaves at the treeline behind the house. She didn't bring the calf with her this time. From what I've read, a calf does wander a bit from the mother, so it's not that unusual. However, that's the best time for people to stay back because a person never knows if they have inadvertently placed themselves between the two. When the little ones wander, the suggestion is to give them extra space. I tried to get a better picture angle tonight, but very tough with the fence in the way.

I've set out squirrel feeders, bird feeders, bird baths and salt licks . . . I can't imagine what it is like to have a moose make your yard or fence line part of their domain. Alaska, what a place!

We are not quite that hot here yet. I've become so spoiled that it gets into the 80's and I'm miserable. :) We have several moose who enjoy wandering through our yard. Even our three Great Pyrenees puppies don't deter them. They are big and can be very aggressive especially when they have young. I'm hoping we can get up to Alaska one of these days so I can see a place where the sun doesn't set. Right now we have about 4 hours of darkness and even then only a couple hours where it is dark
