Going to have to turn to Grumpy Cat for my fave platitude...

When life hands you lemons
Freeze them and then throw them as hard as you can at the people who piss you off

Might not have done this right. Sorry, feeling a bit violent today with no one to take it out on

My favorite, told to me by a very wise man: Never accept "No" from someone that is not authorized to say "yes".

Two of my least favorite platitudes are somewhat redeemed by the rejoinders I heard later.

God never gives you more than you can handle. But I wish He didn't trust me so much.

God never closes one door without opening another. But it's hell in the hallway.

With a nod to dc, a couple that I'll throw out there.

The truth shall set you free, but it might just piss you off first.

(This one I kind of ripped off, but it's worth putting here.)

If you go to bed every night praying that things will get better, and realize every morning that they won't, you have no one but yourself to blame for being miserable.

Great idea...I love platitudes!

Time heals all wounds.

It'll all come out in the wash.

Pretty is as pretty does.

"It is what it is."

What the feck does that mean? Does it mean anything at all? What could the 'it' in that phrase possibly be other than what it *is*?

I've sometimes quoted the line and replied where I've seen it in a given thread, with just the comment "No it isn't" - simply to see if the person who's said it will argue with me. They never have.

I actually know someone who uses that line whenever he can, and all i can do is shake my head internally because.....well, what is there to reply? Just a way of saying things to have the last word? Annoying.

Edited to add my own platitude : If you dont think, then you shouldnt talk.

I agree that is a bit trite and empty, because I feel the reverse holds a greater truth.

Many years ago I used to have a sig saying "behind every good sub is a great Mistress"

ETA - One nonsensical one I've found is "it's always in the last place you look"

of course it is, you're not looking for the damn thing anymore once you've found it...

Since that saying is one I came up with, I think it is neither trite, nor empty and requires both to step up, yours makes the master an impotent and unimportant part of creating a solid relationship and puts all the responsibility on the shoulders of the slave.

I think that's just a variation on the serenity prayer... accept what you cannot change and move on. But I know someone who's saying it all the time and like the word "nice" when something gets overused it becomes rather meaningless.

I'm always suspicious of it being used on the basis of an overly-conservative temperament in relation to a given subject, so: 'this is how X is, X can't be any different and it's delusional/immoral/dangerous to try to make or see X as any different, so accept X as it 'is'.

I know a bloke who was so against being given orders that he'd bark out the word 'NO!' at anyone who said that to him. Likewise, 'Have a nice day!'.

I haven't read the whole thread but, in building upon what kiwisub right above me (at the time of typing) said; I have two "standard" answers to "Have a good day" when a clerk in a store says it to me.

Firstly, I make sure I'm smiling so they know I'm joking with them and I either say: "Don't tell me what kind of day to have" or: "Thanks but, I have other plans". That usually stops them in their tracks.

As far as words of wisdom I may use? There's a ton that seem to be good advice but, probably my favorite is: "Dare to be different".

Peace and comfort,

Michael
