ORIGINAL: PeonForHer FR Errr . . . Now this is undoubtedly a stupid question - but does it help to drench one's house with a hose before a fire reaches it? I live in a region prone to big wildfires, and when you watch the live news coverage, you sometimes will see people trying to protect their homes from the blown embers that way. Firefighting aircraft will save homes by dropping water or retardent at just the right moment. Some friends of mine who live way out, had their house saved by just such a drop, while everything around them burned. Some homes in the most fire-prone places have large sprinkler sytems, gravity fed from tanks, which can really saturate the house and grounds, but simply creating a 100 foot defensible space around the house can make all the difference.
