If you are a US soldier deployed abroad, and you click this link http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/01/us-military-blocks-guardian-troops , you won't be allowed to read it. Why? Because it links to a mainstream British newspaper which is reporting things your Government thinks you shouldn't know.

Back in W's day, a lot of US liberals reckoned they could only get honest US news from the BBC and UK papers. But at least they were still allowed to. How much longer before civilians are also "protected" this way?

(Hint: the necessary powers will be presented to Congress as stopping child pornography.)

Clear signal that as a solider you are required not to think and not to talk.

I am so baffled that people still sign up for this - how on earth do you know what you are fighting for????

We who signed up for to serve in the military weren't necessarily so concerned about and machinations of our government. I don't mean to sound like a recruiter, but military service does offer many benefits, like OJT, the G.I. Bill, and free medical care among others. On some level, everyone who serves has a desire to be part of something bigger than themselves and a love of duty, much like those who volunteer in their communities. Don't bash those who serve over what the idiot politicians do.

But then you become not only part of the problem to do their bidding but allow it to be far too easy to be sent into wars for profit and hegemony.

But do not fear, there will be a draft in the future forcing draftees into involuntary service to the state.

Since I come from a service family myself, I'm not about to bash those who choose that vocation. But for a soldier to say he's not interested in politics is about as smart as a sailor not being interested in the weather. The government's politics not only decide whether you get sent into winnable or unwinnable wars, but whether, when you come home, you get treated as heroes or shit (as happened to a lot of Vietnam vets through no fault of their own.)

Administrations come and go, there is always the hope that the next one will be better.
