It seems like a lot of people on here are very pessimistic about the Fourth of July, and where our country is at. And I don't disagree that we're having a lot of problems, between the economy and the NSA and the Voting Rights Act decision and our disgraceful treatment of our veterans.

But last night, I saw a whole lot of happy, excited immigrants waving flags and setting off fireworks, celebrating being in America. And it made me think - in some ways, a lot of ways - this country still works. We're a nation of immigrants (my great-grandparents came here with nothing but a grade-school education and a hard work ethic), a place where people can come to be free and safe and make something of themselves. Where people can be part of new a culture without giving up their old culture, where all kinds of people can come together. And I think that's wonderful.

Happy (belated) Independence Day!

You would be correct of course but now not nearly to the extent it was. The barriers (see: immigration reform) and costlier (see the impoverishment of about 50-60%) it is much higher. For example there isn't a generation that hasn't paid less percapita for food...and more for medicine...than ours.

America was...was an ideal. Now it is a battle just to maintain everything you mention. Many countries 'still work' now some are even...better than ours.

Never has a national ideal come to fruition. It is an absurd metric.
