graceadieu -> Happy Fourth (7/5/2013 9:17:15 AM)

It seems like a lot of people on here are very pessimistic about the Fourth of July, and where our country is at. And I don't disagree that we're having a lot of problems, between the economy and the NSA and the Voting Rights Act decision and our disgraceful treatment of our veterans. But last night, I saw a whole lot of happy, excited immigrants waving flags and setting off fireworks, celebrating being in America. And it made me think - in some ways, a lot of ways - this country still works. We're a nation of immigrants (my great-grandparents came here with nothing but a grade-school education and a hard work ethic), a place where people can come to be free and safe and make something of themselves. Where people can be part of new a culture without giving up their old culture, where all kinds of people can come together. And I think that's wonderful. Happy (belated) Independence Day!
