When you were a child, what book, movie, song, or historic event affected your life more than any other? I got an email from my oldest grandson who was given this assignment to ask his parents and grandparents. For me: Book: Red Badge of Courage. Movie: Darby's Rangers \ Event: Their were two, the JFK assassination and the RFK assassination. I barely remember the JFK assassination, what I remember most was how it affected my parents. The RFK assassination is easier to remember.

The death of the pope john paul or september 11.both of those were adolescence though. Hmm Movie would have to be breakfast at tiffanys would probably be the movie.i felt such a kinship with holly golightly, and to this day can quote much of it.it was the first movie I had ever seen based on a book, and I remember being so excited such a concept existed. Anna karenina is the book.

Book "China Court" by Rumer Godden. I don't know how often I reread it. No movie. Assassination of JFK. Coming home from school, finding my mother weeping in front of the tv set in her room, spending the rest of the day there at her side watching the footage.

the fall of the Berlin Wall MTV Shakespeare The Amnesty International Tour Reagan Miami Vice Peter Gabriel, Sting, David Bowie the androgyny of the 80's. The explosion of the Challenger shuttle The Breakfast Club geez....I could go on and on. The 80's were an amazing time.

Book: The John Jakes historical series (The Bastard, the Rebels, etc.) Movie: The Count of Monte Cristo Event: Death of my mother. If you mean national / international event, I'd say the destruction of the Berlin Wall - I remember thinking it was really arrogant for Pres. Reagan to order the Germans around...or the marriage of Prince Charles / Princess Diana because it was the first time I got up so early in the morning to witness history. I was the only one in my family who saw the event live on TV because the rest of them slept in.

historical: the wall in Germany as it split my own family and also impacted IMO on dad due to his experiences in refugee camps... event: moving in another village with my parents where they bought a house but where we lived too close to two predators...

I know there were other kid's books I read but the first book that stuck with me was "Run Silent,Run Deep" The movie that stuck with me was "Old Yeller". The events were the Cuban missile crisis...I remember my dad had a underground shelter build and stocked with some provisions [which I now know wasn't nearly enough] and JFK's assassination.Both of these events affected the adults in my life in such a way that it influenced my life as well.

The moonshots. I missed the first couple because I was so young, but the rest I remember. I thought it was just something that was done all the time. I cried when I learned Nixon cancelled them. Bad, bad Richard Nixon. You made a little boy cry way back in the '70s.

Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land (one of the books credited for shaping America) and Time Enough For Love a nice view of love and the poly heart of an immortal. The many writings of my favorite libertine, Marquis de Sade and his sobering view of politics and morals. See foot note of OP in BDSM books thread for long list of books. Landing on the moon.

Maybe I am just following you around today, Sunshine, but SOMEONE ELSE HAS READ JOHN JAKES!!!!!!!!!!????????? There was a "North and South" book one and two made for TV mini-series. My parents recorded it and I watched it an untold number of times. Then my parents got the books it was based on and a bunch of other John Jakes books from a friend to let me read. For years I have felt that I am the only one who ever knew about Orry and George.

Event: the explosion of the Challenger Shuttle. I remember being in 5th grade and it was the first time the school let us watch the launch live. Books: The Yearling. Very good coming of age story and I love the setting. Where the Red Fern Grows. Another good coming of age story. The Outsiders. Stay gold Ponyboy. Movie: Fiddler on the Roof. It started my love for musical theater.

I was an avid reader as a child, but no books really stick out as having any particular influence. I wasn't big on history or current events when I was young, so I can't say any events directly affected me. One thing that does pop into my mind is the movie Amadeus. It was my mother's favorite movie and I watched it with her many times. Besides immediately falling in love with the music, I was inspired by him in several ways. That movie was the reason I took on the violin.

President Carter conceding the election before my mom got a chance to get off of work and vote. She was very angry, feeling like the west coast didn't really count. I became more interested in politics after that. Mt St Helens eruption. Very dramatic for us, everyone knew someone who was close to dangerous mudslides and choked, overflowing rivers. "Roots" was very intense, I was in 7th grade. It had a profound effect on me. Before that I was obsessed with Gone With The Wind. I still love that movie, and book, but in a different way.

Book series: Encyclopedia Britannica, Oxford's Dictionary, The Old Testament, James Bond Movie: Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliette Event: JFK assignation, ...seeing something in the sky vanish.

~FR~ I really can't narrow down which book, movie or song affected me most. There were simply too many. I can, however, tell you exactly which historical event did: the Iran hostage crisis. I was in second grade when this took place and remember watching something about it on TV every evening on the national news. All the images really scared me and I remember feeling so scared for the hostages. I was amazed when they made it out of there. That event really stuck with me as did the whole Star Wars program (Strategic Defense Initiative). That got us - as seventh graders - talking about nuclear war and how horrifying the thought was. luci

I credit that series with my long standing love of historical novels. I had hated history before that. Those books - and specifically the characters - made me understand history so much better. All the implications of discoveries and legislation, weather and the commonalities amongst people. It was really amazing for me. By the way, the miniseries is on youtube.
