TearCollector -> How to find a BDSM sympathetic Doctor (7/7/2013 10:04:48 PM)

This probably has come up before. I did a quick search and didnt see it but I cant be the first. Im positive we have MD's here. How do we find you?

Honestly? I've found that if I'm honest with my doc, and clearly enjoy whatever's got me marked up, they're always just kind of like "oh, ok" and move on. They've seen it all, really. And if I do get someone who is less than sympathetic, then I don't see them again.

my doctor is fine with the lifestyle most drs are if you are honest with them

The worst any of them could do is to try and get you to file domestic violence charges. If you explain and they persist then I would move on to another doctor. :)

I am an MD. Not sure how you would find an MD who is BDSM sympathetic. Would be cool to have a database like that, but many docs wouldnt want that info public.
We have a basic intro to BDSM in med school, usually a 10-15 minute presentation along the lines of "this is not a paraphilia, and not necessarily abuse." The absolute worst that an MD can do is report for domestic violence if there are serious injuries, but most wouldn't go that far if there is a plausible explanation (too much paperwork). I would say just be honest, and be prepared to explain some of the activities which you do. We don't know all the different kinks. And as Myani implied, some docs are more open minded than others.
Hopefully it helps a bit.

I have seen, more than once on this site, suggestions that there are ways/places to find kink-friendly therapists. Perhaps such therapists might know of kink-friendly physicians.

The National Coalition For Sexual Freedom has a database of various professionals including medical, that voluntarily list themselves as being "kink aware"

No matter what you're doing, they've seen worse in the ER. Most doctors will be unshockable. Just be honest and come in the first time without welts and bruises. Don't be embarrassed, just be matter of fact about what you do.

Ask them if they would prefer you see a colleague instead, they can always refer you to someone else. But if you don't make this into a big deal, they shouldn't either.
