Stalin did it. Hitler did it. Pol Pot did it. Mao did it.

WASHINGTON — In an initiative aimed at rooting out future leakers and other security violators, President Barack Obama has ordered federal employees to report suspicious actions of their colleagues based on behavioral profiling techniques that are not scientifically proven to work, according to experts and government documents.

The techniques are a key pillar of the Insider Threat Program, an unprecedented government-wide crackdown under which millions of federal bureaucrats and contractors must watch out for “high-risk persons or behaviors” among co-workers. Those who fail to report them could face penalties, including criminal charges.

Obama mandated the program in an October 2011 executive order after Army Pfc. Bradley Manning downloaded hundreds of thousands of documents from a classified computer network and gave them to WikiLeaks, the anti-government secrecy group. The order covers virtually every federal department and agency, including the Peace Corps, the Department of Education and others not directly involved in national security.

This is an extension, even if not directly stated, of the Patriot Act begun under Bush. After all, it's patriotic to support the government in all ways, isn't it? Know your neighbor? Know your customer? Banking records, private communications, surveillance, ad absurdum.

Bloomberg Businessweek has a headline - Security-Enhanced Android: NSA Edition

I can't think of anything more workplace depressing, and dangerous, than what Obama is ordering of government employees.

Isn't this just a logical continuation of the "Patriot Act"?

Unfortunately yes, but the logical continuation where applied to past equivalences of witch hunting does not bode well.

For the liberals here, this might be enjoyable. Ron Paul tears the Neo-Conservatives a new one.

Yachtie.......Now the question is , just HOW should the libs who are furious about the continuation and deepening of spying on citizens and reducing privacy, and knowing that the increase in technology, with the number of crazy fundamentalist/terrorists out there of all stripes that ANY administration is going to be able to stop it, change it, or lessen it..yanno, in your humble well thought out thoughts???

Because you KNOW as well as I do that National security, of ANY country is not going to go backwards, or even be able to put the genie back in that particular bottle. just look at the history of the world. Why you need nukes.....cos they have them.........

Protesting, voting them ALL out? rising up against the "tyranny" by "watering the tree of liberty" with blood ??? is ANY of that going to change the next election or the infrastructure of security, both national or globally or the financial profits to be made from knowing what each and everyone of us is doing at any one time?????
Its been going on for longer than a decade and it gets more pervasive.

Whats your solution Yachtie?????beyond berating and blaming the libs for not screaming and shitting themselves in frustration? And really what makes you think that libs arent angry, or wanting to change things????
YOUR lack of understanding of libs /dems/pinkos/commies and other people to the left of you is obvious from your posts from the past couple of years but just because all of a sudden you give a shit and feel all indignant you expect us*as a group* should be agreeing with YOU????

The illusion is finally shattered for you , and all you can do is whinge that people not of your persuasion politically arent whining as much as you are, NOW?
You expect it to change if only the loser libs get mad?
LOL

...smoke and mirrors, designed to obscure the fact that with a properly implemented security system, like the old mainframe-based one they USED TO have, Manning would never have had access to any of those documents in the first place, and basic security profiles would have flagged any unusual access patterns.

Dumping everything on an unsecured Windows network(1) isn't much better than just giving the information to Wikileaks or al-Queda directly.

"The stupid! It hurts!"

(1) regardless of what "security" they claim was in force, that Manning was able to access and copy those files pretty much shows it was as effective as a condom made of toilet paper...

Right. Let's equate govt corruption with the need to protect against national security leaks.

The OP comparison to the worst dictators of the 20th Century is the worst kind of disengenuous hyperbole.

oh come on now.

you as a group spent most of your time ridiculing me, only for me to sit back and CONTINUE to get the last laugh. sad as that may be and how I would have preferred not. Even today, this very moment, nothing has changed, so I am in for few more before all this shakes out. By the time you all catch up it will be over.

Will there be another whiny post about getting reported, after yet another instance of turning a conversation about an issue into a discussion of other posters, Cloudboy?

Oh they are, Lucy. It's just that a whole lot of alleged libs turned out to be nothing but partisan whore Obamabots, who will sprawl back and keep licking that nectar off the balls of anyone with a D by their name, regardless of what totalitarian schemes might get dreamed up and implemented.

LOL and its only libs doing that eh Rich:) but then your side (generic) have no nuts to suck...sigh, so jealous
Its a shame the right/repubs/cons/ind/libertarians et al, dont have a leader or ANY person they can trust to do the "right" thing, in ANY situation, let alone stop/change the security/surveillance.
It goes beyond a person, it goes beyond a country, its the rampaging need for security that makes all of us the victims..... yet no one has a clue on how to reverse it. And they know it. hence all the ball aching against Obama....Its been years in the making, and it isnt gonna change...whoever is the token fall guy this time around.
Weve been suckered in, and now, theres Nothing to be done...is there??? NWO has been a reality for a long time, and its just gonna get worse, EVERYWHERE.
Whats your solution?
I know I dont have one, beyond starting over....and we know that is only gonna happen if suddenly communications (globally) are ended.

btw, this new fantasy of yours is quite distracting

Nothing new about it, Lucy. I've been on about the totalitarian streak in the liberal worldview for a long damn time. It's one of the reasons I dumped the Democrats to begin with (at least the fundie Republican version of the trait is explicitly forbidden by the US Constitution).

You're absolutely right that the box isn't going to get closed again. I was too young for 1984 when I read it, and I do pay a bit of attention to how the government which is supposed to serve the people, is keeping track of them. Snowden's revelations weren't shocking to me. Trying to make the existence of the technology the issue is a recipe for failure. What Snowden gave us was a window of opportunity to take control of how the technology of today, and tomorrow, may be used, and how it may not be used.

What pisses me off with the Obamabots (a term coined by the genuinely liberal Ted Rall btw) is how they'll wail and gnash their teeth the next time a Republican is using the powers and precedents they happily cheered, assumed were fine, or just bit their tongues about, when President Obama drew that authority into his sphere of executive authority. The window won't stay open long, and their voices are needed too, if we are to make use of it.

And do recall please, that the only nice thing I've ever been able to say about the Patriot Act is that at least it comes with a sunset clause.

A sunset clause that is easily overcome. The trouble with assuming that either side has any advantage, is assuming that they are actually sides.

Ah, the age old question, "Who watches the watchers?" Apparently the answer is "The watchers".

I sense a pending implosion of the national security apparatus.

I always heard locks keep people honest, and to thieves a challenge, or something like that.

All we can do is hope and pray the right watchers are in place, and the corrupt ones are taken down. ( Pray there really is something else watching them!) Of course we all need to vote, and keep informed too.

I worked in healthcare, so being monitored is not new thing for me. When you are dealing with someones life, damn tootin, IM going to turn someone in for stealing drugs, or administering care to someone while I think they are possibly under the influence. Or vise versa, turn me in if I am that stupid. I am sure anyone who is in that position or has a love one in that position under the mercy of others, thank their lucky stars for that monitoring.

I wonder if Hitler did that too? Or Stalin? When they monitor inside your own private home is when it will get really scarey. Who knows, they might be watching you right now thru your computer.

Hey now PUT SOME CLOTHES ON< GESSSSSSSS

As I've been trying to tell you all...the US govt. is gone.

When needed, the US govt. turns into ruthless killers. The neocons own the FBI/CIA. Obama is playing ball because...HE WANTS TO STAY ALIVE !!!

The next president let's go ahead and anoint Hillary...anybody you want. Trust me in no uncertain terms...things will get worse. Why ? Because she too will...WANT TO STAY ALIVE.

Look people, THE poster child of conservatism, the man to change the whole dynamic of govt. Ronald Reagan was SUPPOSED TO DIE.

When he didn't...he played ball.
