This is hilarious!

I want to visit Arizona!

Poor old God. If only He'd said, somewhere in the Bible, 'Look, I'm not a git, OK?'

'Discharge these duties'? They have to recite part of the oath of enlistment in the military? Can't these bozos even come up their own verbage?

It should be noted, too, that US citizens have no specific 'duties' attached to their citizenship, other than to obey the law of the land. This is stock-footage fascism.

They'll sort it out. As your link notes:

Thorpe has pledged to amend the measure. "In that we had a tight deadline for dropping our bills, I was not able to update the language," he wrote in an e-mail to the Arizona Republic. "Even though I want to encourage all of our students to understand and respect our Constitution and constitutional form of government, I do not want to create a requirement that students or parents may feel uncomfortable with."

More troubling to me is compelling a student to affirm "that I take this obligation freely" under penalty of being denied his diploma if he doesn't.

That pig won't fly, not even in Arizona.

By using the oath of enlistment, this could conceivably be considered a draft. Or it would at least lay the groundwork for one.

Goofy as this is, I'm not sure it's particularly "Christian" or even that the goal was to snare atheists.

A person's religion has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Sadly, not everyone sees this issue the same way. Many religions are simply not able to live and let live.

With that said, I think in this case they may not have been targeting atheists or even non-Christians as much as inadvertently phrased an oath with the assumption that well of course all people believe in some kind of god. And I guess this just begs the question of why people feel this way. Not everyone believes in god. Just like not everyone is Christian (or Muslim or Buddhist or whatever). For some reason many "liberal" people of faith still assume that people "require" a belief in "god" of some sort. Everyone's beliefs should be respected. And that includes not believing in any form of god either.

You don't want to visit Arizona, trust me.

As far as god goes, if he or she exists, I'm sure they have to wonder why so many of their followers are stupid.

What is funny is you see things like this, and then you hear conservatives whine how they are being seen as being stupid knuckledraggers, and don't understand that things like this, the Texas GOP trying to ban school curricula based around logical thinking, or the doofus from Missouri saying if a woman got pregnant by rape, it wasn't really rape, cause the body wouldn't allow a woman to get pregnant from rape.....I am surprised some of the self proclaimed conservatives on this board aren't on here defending these clucks....

What they also don't realize is oaths like this are illegal, you cannot force people to say an oath. For example, schools cannot force kids to recite the pledge of allegiance, or make them say 'under God' if they object to it, the loyalty oaths they made people say back in the 1950's to keep their jobs were also illegal. What is really, really fucked up is these morons can't understand that an oath that is forced is meaningless, that oaths only mean something when they are said without coercion. Despite what tv dramas say, you don't have to say an oath to give testimony in court, once you agree to testify you are under oath, with the penalty of perjury facing you (the 'so help me God' is kind of stupid in the oaths they give, if God is really the judge of said oath, then why have laws for perjury? I think the oaths are outdated crap, with maybe the exception of going into office, though the president once he takes office has the burden of upholding the constitution.

I don't doubt these are Christians, though the issue isn't really one of religion, the dumber idiots in Christianity love oaths and they also love trying to force people to say them, these are the same people who want forced prayer in public schools and such *shrug*

Isn't this is from Robert Heinlein's, Starship Troopers? Or was it in another of his books that he rambled on about how citizenship should come with duties and obligations, and not simply be granted by right of birth? Except it had nothing to do with God.

I saw we get congress to pass a law requiring all senior girls who are graduated to date only Army Rangers... or maybe swear off all but strawberry ice cream.

I don't defend idiots no matter which side of the fence they sit on. But maybe you are right and I should start judging you by all the ignorant racist shit I hear liberals say.
