LittleGirlHeart -> how can you tell when Mango's and watermellons are ripe? (7/11/2013 5:58:44 PM)

I would love to go get some mango's i've had them like maybe once or twice, but i have no idea how to tell if they're ripe.

When I choose the smaller, Mexican mangoes, I want them completely, nicely soft so that it gives a little when pressed (but not mushy or too soft), and sweetly fragrant at the stem end. I have found the more sweetly fragrant a mango, the sweeter the taste of the fruit.

There's another mango (don't remember what kind) that's larger and has red on it. All of the red may not go away even when ripe, on this one.

If you buy mangos unripe, DON'T put them in the fridge. Leave them out on the counter to ripen. Once they are ripe, they can go in the fridge to slow down further ripening.

To speed up ripening, put them in a paper bag and close it's top.

I could answer the avocado one, but not this one.
I've never purchased fresh mango, or any mango, in my life. I don't think I've even eaten any before so I don't know what they taste like.
I LOVE watermelon, but always just pick the prettiest-looking one, cross my fingers and hope for the best. I've seen people knocking on them but have no clue if they're listening for a hollow sound or what.

Watermelons...thump them. You will be able to hear the difference in sounds. After that, go with which one sounds the best to you. I know it sounds weird but it has worked for me for a long time.

After many years purchasing watermelons from farmers and from regular stores, I learned one thing - just buy any one. Unless you are picking still growing watermelons of the ground, chances are that all of them are ripe enough for you. The main difference in taste and sweetness will be in the type of the watermelon. I found that the ones with seeds tend to be sweeter. Seem like when they were trying to make seedless watermelons they didn't not care so much about taste as they did about number of seeds.

Look for a heavy melon with a deep green color and a yellow bottom. If light stripes go around the melon, it's just not ripe yet.

Why do people thump a mellow? It is sounds hollow, its ripe. Not hollow, unripe.

Mangoes are easy, the softer the riper. Don't get one that's too soft.

Easy, just take a little paring knife with you and.....

A friend of mine suggested scoring the watermelon with a fingernail, if the "stripe" is dark green, then it's supposed to be ripe. My luck for getting a decent watermelon is about 15%......I have thrown away more melons than I have eaten. I could take them back, but once the thing is cut, it leaks juice everywhere. I'l try my friend's way to see if it works.

I LOVE a good watermelon.....I can literally eat half of one in one sitting. Good thing for me it's mostly water!

Mangoes, I don't know about. I tried some once and wasn't impressed by the taste or texture.

ripe ones have a more satisfying kersplat and scatter pattern when chunked off an bridge or cliff at passing boats below.

For the mango ... pick one with lots of color other than green . Red is great . The more red the better . lightly squeeze and it should have a nice give .
Watermelons ... flip them over and look at the bottom there will be a white line . The bigger the line the less ripe it is . A good hollow thump is good way to tell .
When you just can't tell talk to the produce person they are always willing to help . It's is their job to help plus the happier you are the more likely you will come back .

Yes... they are always willing to help.
Dunno where you are but most of the staff in our supermarkets here wouldn't have a clue how to tell the difference! [:D]
