jlf1961 -> Some thoughts... (7/12/2013 11:31:15 PM)

With the loss one of our CM friends had recently, I have been doing some thinking... (that burning wire smell you have all been smelling is me, sorry.)

Last year, I had a femtib bypass in my right leg, the femoral artery was 98% blocked with clots and plaque. The plaque kind of shocked me, I eat healthy, use minimum oil when I cook, no more than a tablespoon except in my stir fry sauce, then it is four tablespoons of canola oil and one of sesame oil.

Once a month I treat myself to either a BK whopper or a small pizza. If I eat any more salads I am going to grow long ears and a cotton ball tail and become a frigging rabbit.

I have always eaten healthy except for a period of depression during my series of back surgeries.

The point is that I had a problem that is usually associated with junk food, lots of grease and a generally unhealthy life style. I take an aspirin a day, and am on two blood pressure meds, a cholesterol med and I dont eat junk food and I walk a minimum of 3 miles a day.

Add to that my niece's boss, a 35 year old man who jogs 6 miles a day, does not eat anything at burger king where he works, had so little body fat that he sank in a pool...

3 months ago he had a stroke.

People, what I am saying is that it is not only your lifestyle, it is also genetics. If you can, get a physical once a year, get a blood pressure cuff, especially any man over 30.

Dont take any chances. I have many on these boards I consider friends, dont know how they feel about me, but it does not matter. When you are borderline agoraphobic, online friends are very important.

My uncle dropped dead last year. And I mean literally dropped dead with a massive heart attack. Woke up feeling unwell and went to his gp (family doctor? Dunno what you call it in the states). Dropped dead in the waiting room.

He was 72 and ran his last marathon 3 months before and was training for his next one. He was slim, toned, ate healthy And went to the gym every day.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Gp is the same thing over here. Until I messed up my back, i was always jogging, weight lifting or swimming. Now if the doc will not sign off a release to let me go back to it, I may do it anyway. the only thing he lets me do is walk.

I'm not allowed to do anything due to the state of my spine. It's so frustrating. I used to be very active and now I'm a blob.

Sorry to hear that.

What I consider worse, the pharmaceutical cocktail I am on has my sex drive at zero. Not that it matters right now, until they remove the tumor in my kidney, I aint worried about sex.

Besides, I have not been in a relationship for a few years now, and to be honest, it has given me time to do some much needed mind cleaning.

Absolutely. Take good care of yourself.

Also, appreciate life.

That lecture hit home hard last week, when my 9 year old nice was hit by a car on her way to school. During the days she was fighting for her life, we got a painful lection about priorities.
Thankfully, she is a fighter, and mostly out of the woods now, but we got a front row look at the fragility of life.

Sorry to hear about your niece, if you do not mind, I will add her to my prayers.

My priorities are in the right place, I want to be around when my great great great great great grand kids get married. While I do admit that achieving that is a long shot, I do have two aces up my sleeve.

1) being an ex ranger, the devil knows that I will attempt to take over if I end up there, and
2) If I make it to heaven, God knows that I will take his golf course and pasture horses on it.

The second "ace" deals with the fact I have seen countless cartoons of God and Jesus playing golf.

I do not mind at all Jeff. In fact, I would be grateful.
Thank you.

I pray your sorrow is lessened, because you appear sad today. It is very nice to hear that people matter to you online, and I am very sorry of your friend.
A nurse I worked with once, saw that I smoked. She was the sweetest woman but said to me. It makes me so angry to see you smoke. I am sure my eyes got wide because she was usually very mild mannered. I said I know I shouldn't smoke,I know it. and She said back, my husband died of lung cancer and never smoke a day in his life, he took such good care of himself. She looked so sad in respect of her I snuffed out my filthy cigarette.
I don't think you will have to take anything, I think it will be given to you.[:)]

I agree, kind of. I think genetics and dumb luck have a lot more to do with one's health than one's lifestyle. There are people who are immune to AIDS, there are folks who live to be 100 even though they smoke like a chimney and love bacon, and then there are those who eat healthy and jog and then drop dead anyway...

Besides, there's still a lot we don't understand in terms of nutrition. Take the French paradox, for example: they eat a lot of saturated fats but have a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease.

Who knows, maybe "eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die" is as much true now as it was centuries ago. Keep an eye on your health but remember to enjoy life while you can, as much as you can.
