AC, ceiling fans- attic fan, chugging water.

No AC where I live, the windows aren't configured for it. Fans, ice water, and I take an old T-shirt, soak it, and wring it out so it doesn't drip and let evaporation do its thing.

AC, ice water, swimming pool, more AC.
Having been blessed with AC since I've lived on my own, I don't remember how I survived my childhood without.

It gets too nasty here to get by without A/C. Even the poor can go to the agencies that provide for the poor and get a window A/C unit. So when it gets hot out I stay inside like everyone else. You know it's bad when it is too hot to go to the pool. Last year we went to the lake and it was as warm as bath water and did nothing to cool us off. [:'(] This year so far is not near as bad as last year though, thankfully.

They make free standing units that dont have to fit in a window. They cost tho 3x what a window unit costs.

Which is precisely why I won't buy one. Plus the fact I'd have to have a custom-cut piece of plexiglass or plywood for the outside vent to fit in the window. And I don't plan on staying here much longer, thus me enduring the heat. I look at it objectively-at least I know how to handle it when the power grid goes tits-up again.

When working outside,I either wet down my cap with ice water or use a wet head band to help keep cool.I also keep a towel to dry off my face when outside since the humidity here is so high. For those that have never tried it,after a shower/bath put a few drops of peppermint oil on a damp wash rag and wipe yourself down. It instantly feels a lot cooler in the room.

By not wearing clothes.

MasterCaneman , you could always try Tazzy's suggestion she posted in Train Wreck on this post ... http://www.collarchat.com/fb.asp?m=4488784 ....[:D]

I coated all the windows with reflecting thermal foil to keep some of the heat out.

We recently bought a poorly insulated 70s property with black asphalt roof, and black brick covering all the south facing surfaces (which also has the most windows) and no A/C.

We've been getting indoor temps in the high 90s for about 6 weeks now, by late afternoon.

This being Colorado it still cools down into the 60s at night though, so every afternoon, at the first sign of things cooling down, we open up the whole house and get fans going to get the cooler air in, and every morning we shut everything up to trap the cooler air inside. It keeps the house reasonable in temperature until about 2-3pm.

Later this year, when the attic has become a more reasonable working temperature, we'll install fans there, and do some major insulation updating. When the roof is getting replaced in a few years, we'll replace it with a metal reflecting roof, and I'll probably end up painting the brick with a reflective paint at some point as well.

I'm not, I'm graduating tomorrow. Suit, robes, hat, the works, for at least an hour and a half. Indoors as well, so not even a breeze. I don't think I'm gonna make it through!

MasterCaneman -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 11:34:42 AM)

You know, that's not a bad idea at that. I'm heading to the store in a bit, maybe I can score a foam ice chest for cheap, and the DG always has cheapo fans. And I'm sure that this house doesn't need ALL of it's 90 degree spouts.

OsideGirl -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 11:39:19 AM)

It's been hot here for more than a week. We have central AC and the house is very well insulated.

stef -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 1:20:06 PM)

It's a lovely 74 degrees here with a nice breeze. No trouble staying cool at all.

jlf1961 -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 1:22:32 PM)

Current temp is in the 70's with a form of water falling from the sky. Not sure but I think it is the end of the world

WebWanderer -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 3:15:58 PM)

Personally, I'm just too cool to be hot. [sm=dancer.gif]

Again, why don't we have a " like" button.

Being at the end of my pregnancy, I can't be cool. Arturas and kids are wearing robes and using blankets, while I'm drinking tons of homemade slushies. The ( thank you God) new cha is setting on 70 and all ceiling gans are going, I'm still dying.

I have great sympathy for those without air!!

slavekate80 -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 7:17:56 PM)

We don't need to cool off here... it's been in the 70s and maybe low 80s for a couple of days now. Of course, 100F+ degree days in the summer are pretty normal and I love the heat anyway, so I like to enjoy it when it's here and just make sure to stay hydrated, and wear a little less to bed.

TheHeretic -> RE: how are you staying cool this week? (7/15/2013 8:08:41 PM)

Upper 90's to 100 degrees here daily. Completely normal for July. It was a bit stuffy, the day we got up to 115 a couple weeks ago.

Swamp cooler and ceiling fans - no problems
