Obama to Bush 41: We are a ‘gentler nation’ because of you

(CNN) – It was a homecoming for former President George H.W. and former first lady Barbara Bush at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. on Monday where they joined President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, in presenting the Points of Light honor for extraordinary work in community service.

The Points of Light Foundation, now the world's largest service organization coordinating volunteer projects, started during the Bush administration. The 41st president serves as the non-partisan, non-profit foundation's honorary chairman and his son, Neil Bush, is the president.

Obama thanked the former president for his long legacy of community service.

Obama credited Bush with setting off a sea change of volunteerism among Americans.

"Volunteerism has gone from something some people do some of the time to something lots of people do as a regular part of their lives," the president said.

"We are surer a kinder and gentler nation because of you," he added.

At a time of polarization on countless fronts, I found this heartening and thought others might too.

It is nice, but is it any more than lip service? Yeah. I know. I'm not exactly helping the polarization issue. But, I'm being honest and sincere. I don't believe much at all that comes out of the President's mouth. Primarily because he is a politician, and you know what they say about how to tell if a politician is lying. I also believe he'd say what-the-fuck-ever to benefit himself, his party, or his beliefs.

So, a former President is back at the White House giving an award to honor someone or several people for their community service. What is else Obama going to say? "Hey, great job with this community service thingy, but you really fucked the US up all across the globe. Yeah, it's all nicey nicey that you have people helping others out here, but you shouldn't have (insert topic to blame on Bush here)."

He's a politician. He will say what-the-fuck-ever to not look bad.

You know W and Clinton are friends, right?
As in, W calls Slippery Bill "Bubba."

I have visions of them getting bombed at the ranch, bitching about the press.

Well for things to 'progress' all of those at the top need to be bipartisan.

For power to continue to be consolidated at the top, and trust me kinkroids...power is most certainly continuing to be consolidated in the executive by memo or decree...they must be bipartisan.

DS is correct...what the hell do we expect him to say ? All presidents need to keep the fluidity of executive power in the country...flowing down that bipartisan, fascist sewer.

Bah. Doing nothing in the absence of consensus isn't a bad idea.

Trust me on this one too, the executive branch is not...doing nothing and doesn't need consensus. Obama is following the neocon script almost to a T. In fact, we have become cost-effective, no more off shore rendition...now it's off shore execution.

I'd go so far as to say that government "doing nothing" is the polar opposite of a bad idea, in most cases.

Really???? Has any one else noticed? Should we ask an Iraqi/Afghani/Palestinian for a second opinion?

Are you thinking of Bush 43, Tweak? This was his father, who served from 1989 to 1993.

I'd say that doing nothing is what the federal govt was best designed to do.

Which is to say, then, that the 30 yr. US jihad against regulation of all sorts by various congresses and administrations, and the subsequent financial and economic core meltdown as inevitable result therefrom, is what government is best designed to do.

Yeah, we've heard this before.

We tried that with the Articles of Confederation.
