ORIGINAL: tweakabelle The campaign to boycott divest and sanction Israel for its abhorrent behaviour towards Palestinians continues to go from strength to strength. Following Stephen Hawking's widely publicised decision to boycott an academic conference, European banks have considered a proposal to boycott any company that has "economic links" with the Occupation. In Friday's editorial, Israeli newspaper Haaretz comments: "Major banks in Europe with operations around the world have been exploring the possibility of barring loans to Israeli companies that have a business or economic link with the occupied territories. According to the information received, these banks’ investment committees have been considering recommending barring their institutions from providing loans, or any other assistance, to Israeli companies that manufacture, build or conduct commerce in the territories, or to banks that provide mortgage lending or loans to builders or buyers of housing in the territories. Although the recommendations have been rejected for the time being − after an Israeli lobbying campaign that came against the backdrop of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s diplomatic initiative in the region − the proposal will continue to hover over Israel. The magnitude of the danger this poses to the Israeli economy is hard to overstate. A European economic boycott of those with any connection to the occupied territories would be very broad. And Livni is warning that it would spread way beyond that. Even at this point, the worldwide Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement (BDS) has chalked up a not-inconsiderable number of achievements. As a result, Israel is facing its moment of truth. Is it prepared to pay a steep economic price for its continued occupation of the West Bank and for its diplomatic inaction? Is it ready to pay the price of the government’s refusal to work for the establishment of a Palestinian state, to which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu committed back in 2009, with the economic implications that such a boycott entails?" Friday's Haaretz editorial, as quoted at http://mondoweiss.net/2013/07/haaretz-warns-israel-is-facing-its-moment-of-truth-as-europe-explores-sanctions-against-companies-tied-to-the-occupation.html Will Israel finally accept reality and conclude that its attempt to steal the West Bank is doomed? Is it time for those of us with commitments to human rights and peace with justice to join the boycott, if you haven't done so already? Is there any other non-violent strategy available to those of us who want to see an end to Israeli ethnic cleansing, apartheid and war crimes? After 60+ years of Palestinian dispossession, exile and slaughter at Israeli hands, isn't it time that the West put its foot down and told Netanyahoo, whose record of belligerence and intransigence is second to none, to stop obstructing peace, cease settlement/colony activity immediately and to conclude a just and fair peace with Palestinians? Feel free. Needless to say I won't be supporting such a boycott. And in fact will go to a Jewish deli today for a delicious corned beef. One would have to wonder why the Israelis would have to steal the west bank, when they have already conquered it? You know in those wars where 6 arab nations attempted to drive israel into the sea. Regarding 60+ years of Palestinian dispossession. Would you care to show me on a map where the nation of Palestine was on the map around 1948? See cause, my maps don't have it. Of course, I see Jordan. Syria. Lebanon. Egypt. So perhaps you're confusing ARAB oppression of palestinians with Israel. So while we're on the subject of peace and justice: can you say you support the right of the Israeli state to exist - without any other preconditions?
