I done trying to explain it to you. You don't get it because you don't want to get it.

Dry asparagus prompts questions about racial discrimination in University City

It started in May when resident David Olander was perusing the produce section of the University City Schnucks. He noticed the asparagus weren’t resting in a tray of water. “It was just sitting there dried out,” said Olander, a member of the city’s human relations commission.

Olander summoned an assistant manager, and then he asked the question: Did the quality of the asparagus have any relationship to the store’s location in a black neighborhood?

Olander’s experience prompted him to write a letter to Schnucks CEO Scott Schnuck, and out of that came a meeting with Schnucks employees. But the letter and meeting were tinged with allegations that the St. Louis area’s largest grocery chain was discriminating against minority communities

Glad the we don't need the voting rights act anymore, and that any claims of bias or racism is "playing the race card."

We will have racial problems as long as it is convenient for the political forces in this country. They are merely a tool to garner votes and keep a certain subset of the population in control of the rest of the country. It's a convenient way to redirect attention from what's really happening.

This could very well be true, although I think that the racial problems were created from the very beginning. Wealthy whites were faced with a problem of poor, landless whites wanting more land, which the wealthy whites were not willing to share. So, folks like Andrew Jackson came up with the idea that these poor, landless whites should be given land...somewhere. Since they couldn't give away the land already owned by wealthy whites, they had to give away someone else's land and force them off - which is what the Trail of Tears was all about.

Concepts of race and class have been somewhat convoluted in the American experience. One might presume that lower-class blacks and whites would find some ground for common cause, but such is really not the case in America, since both groups are kept somewhat at odds with each other. Likewise, Hispanics are also kept at odds with both blacks and whites.

I agree with that. The colonists didn't cleanse themselves of their class attitudes when they came here: they merely opened them up to a new class of royalty (in a way). Each wave of immigrants were treated to the same hostility and suspicion (No Irish Need Apply ring a bell?). The situation regarding blacks is different, though, as they have had to go through the process a couple of times, in different ways. In any event, racial tension has always proven to be an excellent tool for the body politic to exploit for its own purposes.

You get what you bring into it, taz. You see race.

I see a poster saying Obama's healthcare bill is going to take our medical care to the levels enjoyed by that leading area of technology - africa.
I see a poster decrying cronyism and third world solutions. Oh an socialist policies.

I think its politically effective satire.

tazzygirl -> RE: Race And Race Baiting (7/17/2013 3:37:00 PM)

Personally, it shows he doesnt know what he is talking about. Obama's mother was born in Kansas... some of his forefather's were Christians, too.

LOL... the one with the African voodoo doctor outfit? You do know they have health care in Africa now, yes? How about the one with him in a watermellon patch? Care to make that into a political statement?

Im sorry, you may want to believe that people had good political motives to portray someone as they did him. I will always disagree. There are enough ways to demean the man without making either his heritage or his race the topic.

Ya know, when Cain was running, and his little propensity for playing with women came out, I realized then that he was not fit for office. Oh, many called me racist here. How I didnt like a "real black man" running for office. And Im usually pretty quick to post something funny. When I discovered the Obama Dildo, I just had to share it with people here. In fact, 4 times.

That last includes the following....

I dont mind people ragging on him.. I do it a lot myself. But at least rag on him with accuracy. There is lots of valid material to use.

But when we slam anyone about their race, using it to intentionally try to sway opinions and silence the one speaking, it demeans us all.

And, for me, thats racism.

Hillwilliam -> RE: Race And Race Baiting (7/17/2013 4:23:10 PM)

Blatant racism of any ilk under the guise of "Free Speech" just makes whoever is posting/demonstrating it look like a dumbass.
If they're that fucking ignorant, let em have at it so everyone will know who to steer clear of.

tazzygirl -> RE: Race And Race Baiting (7/17/2013 4:35:07 PM)

I agree, Hill. However, to hear someone try and justify it....

Phydeaux -> RE: Race And Race Baiting (7/17/2013 4:42:12 PM)

I didn't see one with obama in a watermelon patch.

Regardless, do you really think thats worse than the two examples I posted that said Kill Bush?

Really?? Posting a racist sign is worse than calling for someone's death? Really???

Let alone calling him a genocidal murderer? Really?

You're right. We disagree. Perhaps I should have said that it would be my preference if all parties kept all materials clean and above board.
But since that isn't going to happen, (and since the supreme court has found it to be protected speach repeatedly) yeah, I'm afraid we're going to have to disagree.

I have been in many many 'hoods across this nation, never had a lick of trouble.

I'm white. I live in "the 'hood. I am never afraid of my neighbors. The neighbors I do seem to have problems with happen to be white. The Muslim family across the street keep to themselves and are seldom even home; the black families next door to me, down the street and on either side of the Muslim family are all friendly to me and help me out with my mowing; shoveling; gardening. Around the corner things are bad and the cops are in the neighborhood quite often.

Think people didnt call for Obama's death?

Politics is getting way out of hand... or so people believe. But it was this bad in the early days of political office wooing. Lies, slander, ect.

What people neglected to see what the result of such signs. In a nation that is still feeling the undercurrents of slavery and civil rights (whether you believe that to be true or not, others do), attacking Obama based upon his race as the wrong move. It did nothing more than solidify his base.
