When my family first moved to Pennsylvania we went on a family canoe trip on the Delaware River. We actually had to cross the river to rent canoes on the New York side of the river. We were a few miles North of Narrowsburg.

After a few miles of nice, calm river we went through the narrows. The narrows is also known as Skinners Falls. My canoe didn't take on water, everyone else .....got a little wet.

Shortly thereafter we pulled off on a small island to:
a) dry off
b) eat some lunch

While we were eating lunch my little brother got his hands dirty.

Well, hey! There is a big river full of running water that you can use to wash off your hands!

So little bro waded into the river to wash his hands.

At this point I should point out that when a bit younger we had spent a couple of years in the South Pacific. The water was crystal clear and you could see the more violent types of fish from a long ways away. The Delaware isn't quite so clear.

So when a fin comes poking out of the surface of the water you don't know what it is. My little brother was washing his hands in the river when a fin broke the surface and was aimed straight at him. In a panic he reached into the canoe next to him and grabbed a paddle.

*WHACK* *SPLASH* *WHACK* *SPLASH*

My little brother managed to club to death a three and a half foot shad* with a CANOE PADDLE! Now that's some impressive fishing.

And you thought being paddled by your dom/domme was harsh.

*That's a type of river fish.

Did that shad resemble this fish?

Edit: possibly the most shocking thing I've learned since I joined collarme is that fish like the one in this picture exist.

You shouldn't have told him. Naming things takes some of the magic out of them! On the other hand, he'll probably sleep better for it...

When I lived in an atoll we had crystal clear water and we also had fish that big. Tiger sharks mostly, a few hammerheads, etc. Thing is you could see those things coming from a mile away.

In that murky river water you couldn't see two feet in front of you.

CHOMP! You're dead. Next time look where you are going.

It would have been better if it was a female shad filled with roe. Shad roe is awesome.

It actually was a female shad with roe.

That was the confusing part: she still had roe so why was she going batshit crazy on my brother? I make fun of him from time to time, but there is no way he looks like a male shad.

I don't know what's scarier: the fish or the look on that guy's face.

Needles said she saw the fishing program episode when that scary guy caught that scary fish. I would only have been able to peek at it through my fingers. It confirms everything I've been afraid of about rivers.
