If you can't take the time to read the thread and find out what is actually being asked or discussed....why comment?

Because they can.

P.S.  If someone else already said that I apologize, I didn't read the whole thing.

wandersalone -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 7:26:17 AM)

If I am going to reply to an OP about a serious topic I would read the entire thread to ensure I get an understanding of the turns the discussion has taken.  If I feel that my views are already stated by others who share them then I would see  no point in simply confirming their views. If I feel that I have something to add to the discussion and OP I will do so

MistressLorelei -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 8:14:38 AM)

If I am going to make a post, I read the entire thread, or at least skim through it.  There are some I have come to recognize that their posts will always say nothing relevant to anything... those I barely glance at.

Often something said within the thread is even more comment-worthy, than the O.P., or further expands on, or heads a different direction than the O.P.  Reading the thoughts of others doesn't change my opinions whatsoever, but I won't bother to post if all everyone is saying is a bunch of what I was planning to say.

Often three or four pages into the thread, the topic changes, sometimes the O.P. has disappeared or made further comments changing the tone of the thread, and when a post appears commenting solely on the O.P., it screams 'I haven't read a damn thing here'.

I also don't get why people post things like' I haven't read the entire thread...'.  I guess some people only come to the message boards to  state their opinions, and wish to make it known that they don't care about what anyone else has to say.

lisa1978 -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 8:29:30 AM)

When reading a thread with a lot of posts I often go to that conclusion that many times people often stop paying attention to the OP and have focused on other things. I think these other things can be personal hot button situations but they can also be a natural progression on the topic. Sort of an unintentional created topic.

I do think too often that people are sometimes wanting to write something for the sake of writing something but that is just human nature and it creeps into message boards as well. I try my best to write mostly on the OP topic but I also know that I sometimes do not and respond to the other things in the thread. I generally will read but not write in threads that already have a lot of posts because anything pertinent has been written and the thread has become a flame war or a debate between 2-4 people.

LaTigresse -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 8:33:03 AM)

If the OP is asking a question that they are looking for each person to answer based upon their individual opinion or experience then I don't feel reading the whole thing is that important. I can answer the question, skim the thread and move on.
If I am reading a long thread for the first time I quite often get disgusted and leave without bothering to finish it OR add to it.......as in many of the weight issue threads.....been there seen it.........its just the same old B.S. every time. Personally, I don't care who is fat, who hates fat or who loves it. Similarly the ever repeating fakes, not real, real.......etc etc etc... lines of boring chatter. I just get too tempted to hijack those so its best to avoid.

rose442 -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 9:08:40 AM)

I read the OP and usually read a few more after that. But IF a post is something that I know I will have a part of, or is a part of my experience I reply with a comment on the OP BEFORE I read anything else someone has said. I don't want the influences of others. On this thread I read about 10 reply's to the OP and now replying. It all depends on the topic and what it pertains to.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 9:27:43 AM)

I generally read the first couple lines of each post, if it sounds like just bitching,  flaming, or sucking up I skip to the next, if I come along one that happens to be saying something I read the whole post. So, I guess I read all of  about half of the posts, and read a couple lines of all posts. Most of the time this works, sometimes, what starts out as a flame end with a point, but rarely so it's the method I'm sticking to. And some people I just generally skip, because they are asses. LOL. Asses, in the sense they never contribute a thought or perspective, just jump on bandwagons. So, no loss there.

Often people make comments....and sometimes go on long rants...and it's obvious that they never bothered to take the time to read the thread. They see some hot button word in the title and off they go. Then a bunch of other people will jump on their tirade bandwagon.

Erin, you're my hero (heroine).

I'll admit that i go on long rants, but they almost always have to do with the OP. And i almost always read the whole thread before i post.

I think some people are blinded by their intense opinion about the OP that they get excited, and can hardly wait to rant about the OP.

Have you ever noticed how people drive crazy on the highway? Don't they know how to drive? Is the DMV giving a liscence to just anyone who walks in and waits in line for four hours?

And why are the lines so long at the DMV? Do the employees think we have nothing better to do than wait in line then have to deal with rude people?

Mercnbeth -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 11:35:24 AM)

This is a rhetorical question right?

MsIncognito -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 11:42:45 AM)

When you say 'read the thread' do you mean just the OP or the OP and all of the posts in response? Personally, I don't think people are required to read the entire thread in order to add their thoughts. Sometimes I may have something to offer the OP (suggestions, thoughts, commisseration) and don't think I should have to read every other post in order to respond. If a thread is too long (more than a few pages) I will rarely respond because most of the time threads that get longer than that have usually veered off onto some tangential plane so responding to the OP at that point would be out of place to anyone who's been following the thread from the start. I think people should read the OP (not just the title) but I don't think it's necessary to read what everyone had to say in response before posting.

Hey, I've got my own EASY button

Yeah I agree, I noticed that shit too all the time... those fooking retards!

OedipusRexIt -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 7:13:02 PM)

To the OP:  I appreciate the frustration underlying your post.

When you go to the trouble to post something, you want people to read it.  If they comment, you hope that the comments are relevant.

I find I read concise comments and skip any that are verbose or put into silly fonts.  If those people have a point, they obviously thought it necessary to disguise it and I skipped them.

Some people I've just learned to skip altogether.  In a perfect world, I would give you a list...

Now see, here's where I'm often misjudged.  I do care what anyone else has to say, but I am at a complete loss here...how does any of this thread benefit me?

LTRsubNW -> RE: Have you actually read the thread??? (6/28/2006 10:18:36 PM)

(I just read the entire thread, and it suddenly dawned on me...this is a Jerry Seinfeld thread....it's entirely, 100%, absolutely about nothing).

If I find a thread interesting and/or the boards witty ones are throwing the humor around I will read the thread and sometimes I will comment and sometimes not.

Other times when the OP asks a personal point of view question or I have interest in the OP but am really not interested in what others have said I respond with out reading the thread, somes I skim them. I like going off on hot buttons sometimes too[8D].
