Bo has the Joy of Cooking. I bought him one when we were living together. It fell apart and he recently got a new one. His favorite joke was that I was 95 pounds when I met him and he fatten me up with our daughter...LOL! It was his BBQ with homemade sauce...he'll cook up some beef ribs for me when I go down there because we seldom grill here. He is also a former chef so anything he cooks is a work of art. He also got me to eat veggies that I refused to eat when I was growing up. I refuse to eat his cilantro beans though...IBS attack...

Got to go to bed soon. Mom has PT at 9 in the morning, we will go visit a friend and then shopping.

I have no doubt that she has an unhealthy relationship with food, and I never said it was easy. But she is acting like she doesn't know that fried foods and chocolate cake and tater tots have anything to do with her weight, and others are trying to educate her about calories and exercise.

My point is not that it's easy, but that she already KNOWS about what foods to eat and what foods not to eat; she KNOWS about exercise. This is not news to her just like it's not news to a smoker to tell them that cigarettes are unhealthy.

I concur. This problem is not about ignorance. The OP does not want to solve it. She just wants to talk about it.

Insert neanderthal gender streotype remark, here.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 12:30:51 AM)

It greatly depends...my 4X and 3X pants are hanging loose on me. I probably have to have a seamstress take them in because I am inbetween the size pants that we got packed in the storage shed. I still wear size 4X shirts because I am top heavy and like longer t-shirts.

Today, while Mom is in PT, I am walking down to the chiropractor's office and set up some sessions. Medicare and Medicaid does cover for a part of them and she bills me after everything is done so no money up front.

What I can't believe is that Mom is willing to diet with me. No more candies, no more sweets. We will keep sugar and sweeter on hand because she likes Splenda and cream in her coffee (coffee makes me sick). Told her that I want to get the blocks and strap (no neckties here, Dad never had any) for yoga and that the stretches with help my muscles. Should get the Healing Yoga dvd this week (got it for $9.25 instead of $14.95 on eBay). I got a couple of toddler afghans I can use as my mat since we got laminate flooring in the living room. That sucker is rough on my knees when I have to kneel down.

We are going to make strawberry fig jam today after shopping. The smell is making me feel sick. I don't eat figs because of the seeds. My uncle S had the trees so around this time, Mom goes picks them and make him jams. Told Bo Mom was making some and he wants a jar. When she is canning, I stay away so I won't get in her way. She teases me that I will not know how to do it...I told her that I can do it but there are too many cooks in the kitchen.

Lastly, I have been battling obesity since I was 14 and hit puberty. The only time I was "thin" was when I was in the military and doing physical training all the time. When I was not running, doing resistance training and other exercises, I was weight training. Now I live in a 2 bedroom trailer with basically no room, one TV and an exercise bike that is a jungle gym to the kiddos...when I am not on it myself. Hell, I have to hide my core ball in the bedroom so they won't play with it.

RochesterDomme -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 1:44:39 AM)

Regarding the food you don't want to waste - you don't have to eat it as is.  You can "slim it down" if you will.  I don't know what you have, but some thoughts here are if it's fried chicken, take off the breading.  If there's a sauce, try and remove as much as possible.  Canned fruit in heavy syrup?  Drain off the syrup.  Canned tuna in oil, drain it and rince it.  Just look at the food and ask yourself how can I make this healthier?  Even if you're knocking off a few calories, it's something.  And it's creating a habit.

Plan out your meals a few days in advance.  This way, you have everything and you won't get into a bind and eat something unhealthy.

I understand your money is tight, but from my own experience, it really helped me to meet with a nutritionist.  We started with what foods do I like and created a program from there.  Not a diet, but a program.  I also set my own rules.  I made a list of foods that I need to eat every day and amounts.  I then made a list of foods I needed to eat several times a week and amounts.  Then I made a list of foods that I could eat maybe once a month or so.  Finally a list of things that are forbidden period.  I found by having my own rules it really makes me stay focused.  I also allow myself 2 meals a week of whatever I want.  As long as it's nothing on the forbidden list.  By putting something on the forbidden list takes away the craving.  Items on my forbidden list include cake, ice cream, empty calories like croutons, cured meats, pie, anything deep fried to name a few.

I also use myfitnesspal on my phone, it's wonderful.  Since you said you can't get apps on your phone.  Get a small spiral notebook and take it with you everywhere.  Write down everything you eat.  No matter how small the portion.  What time you eat and how much.  Also note anything that influenced your eating.  You were stressed out because of x, so you ate a cheeseburger.  Mom made a cake, you felt guilty so you ate a piece or two.  This is your guide for you to see exactly what you eat and why.  Also record any exercise.

I got a pedometer.  I wear it all day.  My goal is the infamous 10,000 steps a day.  That ain't happening anytime soon, but the more I wear it, the more I find myself walking.  I'll check it and see I've got say 2,972 steps.  I'll take a quick walk around the house to get it up to 3,000 steps.

As for exercise.  I was horribly out of shape and fat.  Then I got diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy.  That set me back even more, but also gave me a wake-up call.  I started walking 5 minutes at a time.  When I got used to that, I bumped it up to 7 minutes, to 10 minutes... I'm up to 25 minutes now and my pace is normal.  What aerobic exercise can you do that you can build on?

As far as portions, I use the plate method.  Half of my plate is non-starchy vegetables.  1/4 is a starch, 1/4 is protein.  I also have a piece of fruit.  The website I use is Diabeticlivingonline.com

I cut out diet soda.  I drink water.  I found that after drinking a diet soda, I really craved sweets.  I got a brita water bottle and I take it with me every where.  It cost about $8 and there is a filter in it.  I think it holds 20 ounces.  It saves me money though because I don't need to buy bottled water.  Just a new filter every few months.

Have you had your vitamin D level checked?  Mine was very low, once I started taking vitamin D and calcium supplements, my appetite decreased measurably.

Finally, check out livestrong.com.  It's got a ton of information on eating, articles about foods and motivational things as well.

Oh, get mom a hobby besides cooking.  Is she baking to express love?  Get her knitting for love.  Scarves for the grandkids or for seniors.  Hats for people going through chemo.  I think some of the groups collecting knitted hats supply the yarn and patterns.

And as corny as this sounds "do or do not, there is no try"  yes I'm quoting Yoda.  I find if I tell myself I am doing x, it is much more effective that I'm trying to do x.

Good Luck!

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 2:14:21 AM)

Mom does not know how to knit...and I have a pair of size 50 needles for teaching myself how to make broomstick lace. When she tries to crochet, I am the one who ends up rescuing the project. She can't even read the instructions. Instead, we got her working on genealogy. It was disconcerting to find out that one of your forefathers was a slave owner with a plantation. Its in another state though and the main branch probably does not know us.

Usually when she bakes, it goes to my brother's family. 4 kids...14 to 4...she is a country cook who learned from my father. we always make tons of food and have leftovers or send it home with them.

I misplace my pedometer. I know it is somewhere around here but that means tearing the place apart and I hate doing housework. When Mom was organizing her room, I stayed out. She has her way of doing things and I won't interfere with it.

Hopefully we can get the yard mowed today after shopping. These last 2 rainfalls has really got the grass growing and our neighbor is doing a 3rd cutting of hay.

I am trying to quit diet sodas but I got a good part of a cube of Diet MD left. I drink it mainly for caffeine since coffee makes me sick. I also drink diet green ginseng tea from Arizona with Splenda in it. I keep it chilled in the fridge and drink one glass a day. Afterwards, it is water, about a gallon.

I spend 10 minutes on the exercise bike when the kiddos are not using it was a jungle gym. We just got a swing set out for them so that helps out...I can exercise when I get up from the insomnia attacks or the pain in my back.

I also suffer from IBS attacks and have been for over 10 years. The colonoscopy did not show any damage a few years ago so it is mainly watching what I eat...if it is something really fatty, I know I have to stay home. I eat mainly eggs in the morning if not oatmeal or great grains cereal. I just avoid anything with gluten in it. Same goes for HFCS. I am also under treatment for hypothyroidism...250 mcg per day.

Far more healthy for you if you're going to be drinking cans for caffeine than the crap you're currently drinking...

Missokyst -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 8:26:25 AM)

Sometimes it is frustrating. Since my hospital stay in April I have been keeping watch over everything that passes my lips. I don't want to land back in that hospital bed and because of that I started writing things down. It is a bit eye opening to see what we eat. Turns out though I probably consume 800 calories per day, and still no weight loss. I know that my issue is probably internal and with persistance I am hoping we can find out how to turn things around. It sucks to feel no control over your own body.
Have you tried making recipes like Bobby Deen makes? He makes things his momma made, only much lower in calories.
Dietwise, the paleo is along the same vein as Atkins and South Beach. Atkins worked for me for 6 months then I think it kicked my body into these dietary issues I currently endure. I love the idea of food, but when I shop for groceries I feel like throwing up. Kinda puts me off my game. I would never advise anyone to try any type of Atkins diet.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 10:43:40 AM)

Ahhh...went to the chiropractor and got my back popped. Mom even heard it in the next room. I was able to walk around Super 1 and get some groceries. Will go to Walmart either tomorrow or Friday (more likely Friday when she has PT). Used up the last of my SNAP to get grapes, mixed baby green salad, small bag of potatoes, eggs and plums. Took out a package of chuck tender steak when we got home to cook for dinner tonight. Got the grapes in the freezer because I like them that way...

Got my new J hook in today so I can work on the baby afghan. Been up since 1:30 this morning with pain in my knee...damn gout. I also got news that my bone doctor is going to Midland...at least Mom is through with him. Don't know if the new doctor can put up with two ornery old women...

I'll try them when I run out of Diet MD. My doctor does not want me to drink certain juices due to the development of UTIs. I was drinking Tampico citrus juice until I discovered it contained HFCS, so I switched to regular orange juice. I thought I was doing okay on it until he ordered an UA on me (to check for proteins I think) and told me I had a UTI because of the juice.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 11:52:40 AM)

Fun fact about Mt Dew: my husband used to love it. They don't sell it in UK stores (except for an energy drink version which isn't the same) but a number of the specialty sweet shops imported it so you could still get it if you were willing to pay obscene prices. I went to get him some for a treat last month, and the guys in the shop told me they couldn't get it anymore - it contains ingredients which are banned as unsafe. I'm not certain but I think the substance in question is brominated vegetable oil. The store owner told me that it seems every week they are having to take one US product or another of the shelf because it doesn't meet the standards for consumption.

I always knew processed foods aren't the best for your health, but recently I've been looking up ingredients in the US versions of food and the UK versions of food - thinks like Betty Crocker cake mixes, fast food chains etc - and frequently the US ingredients list is double the length. Interesting that they apparently do have recipes for versions of their product with far less junky additives in, in order to meet stricter restrictions in other countries, but they keep selling the crappy stuff to the Americans. I used to be skeptical of the idea that people are victims of the food that's available to them, but wow, have I learned a lot.

littlewonder -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/24/2013 6:25:54 PM)

So you were in the military so that tells me you already know the basics for losing weight, how to eat and exercise. The military is like that.

So remember your military training. Do what you did then. I mean, I can't think of a better diet and exercise regiment than the military way.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/25/2013 3:59:50 AM)

I know...I am one of those people who has the sway back and lack of upper body strength.

I was in bed before 6 last night. Was nodding off at the computer and Mom said to go ahead and sleep. We did get the fig jam done up...5 pints worth. burnt a finger while trying to get a lid and band on.

Had a steak and modest potato for dinner last night. No desserts.

Diet MD does not have BVO in it. Don't know about regular MD though...guess someone else needs to do some label reading since I don't drink it.

Just up kinda early this morning. Mom tried to mow the yard and the mower did not turn ( one of those electric starts) so we got the battery charging up. So I am catching up on emails and games.

No YMCA/YWCA here. This is a town of 13k. There is a public pool but that is usually full with the kids. I also reside out in the country, so driving 15 miles to a pool for one hour of laps can be counterproductive, especially with today's gas prices.

Highland Park, NJ (Pop.: 13,982) has a YWHA. Wilkes-Barre, PA has a YMCA.

Granted; if there isn't one near you, there's not much you can do but at this point, isn't a little bit of sacrifice (cost of gas and time spent driving) worth saving your life?

You can make excuses or you can look into it. The choice is your'n.

As you were,

Michael

I am over 2 hours away from Dallas...that is the closest facility. Dallas traffic is like LA...

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/25/2013 4:17:56 AM)

You do understand that the fact you didn't have dessert does not make that healthy eating, right?

You need to eat more fruits and vegetables, much less carbs (not more than 2 a day), make your carbs whole grain, and your meat lean. If you eat dairy, make it low fat or no fat. Seriously limit your sugar.

If you'd do the above, you'd lose weight w/o any special diet. Your 'diet' should be lifestyle choices you make on a permanent basis, b/c that's what works.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/25/2013 4:36:27 AM)

Tonight, I am having the salad and Mom will probably have one of her microwaveable meals. Afterwards, dishes will be done and more crocheting. Probably won't go to town unless Mom needs to replace that spark plug on the lawn mower (I got a sneaky suspension that is what is wrong.).

No cake was baked but the mix and frosting was put back up.

The steak was pretty good...a little bit of garlic pepper sprinkled on it and a little bit of olive oil to make sure the meat did not stick to the skillet. Mom offered to cook but I handled it all by myself. Did the potatoes in the microwave (faster that way).

When we go to Walmart, I am getting the yoga blocks and strap and the frozen veggies. Perhaps some more bacon and get some fresh tomatoes as well. Nothing like a BLT for dinner...LOL!

What's wrong with cranberry juice then?

Can't stand the taste...

Toysinbabeland -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/25/2013 5:02:28 AM)

Unsweetened fresh brewed tea

ShaharThorne -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/25/2013 5:07:55 AM)

I like tea, but it has to be sweeten in some way...I generally used saccharin when I go to restaurants. The tea I drink now has Splenda in it.

When I drink hot tea, I use honey...

Toysinbabeland -> RE: Where does this go to? HELP!! (7/25/2013 7:43:47 AM)

How about stevia?
