If you want jump in with the amount you get- how you stretch it- if it is a debit card or paper stamps. How long you been on them- if you run into embarrassment, if you think alot in your town are on them; if you would support tighter limits on not buying soda pop with them, has anyone ever embarrassed you over this- like a cashier?

Please comment on how much assets you are allowed to have.

If you are on any programs- that are lesser known- please share that info- so others might join.

It is up to you how much or how little you wish to share.

Thanks to everyone who participates!

I am on SNAP (the card) and I try to buy healthy foods for myself. Too bad the farmer's market down here does not take it. Once in a while, I will buy a cube of Diet MD and make it last a month unless I am working on a project (this week a prayer shawl for someone). I raid the local bread store and get bread and thin bagels for 99 cents each. If I got a full card when I go down to Austin, I will buy enough food to sustain me during the visit.

No. We work for our groceries. Also, my company even has a garden so that all of it's employees have fresh produce available and keeps free, fresh fruit in the break room.

Hello PA, I hope you are well.

I appreciate your words. I just don't spend much time on this site anymore. It's gotten a bit stale for me and, with the new job, I am busier during the day and always keep myself busy when not at work.

LaT! Nice to see you!

We're not on food stamps since we're doing fine. But, I'm also aware that one decision could leave me without an income.

We've done a garden, I plan on doing some canning and I keep food storage items in case or emergency/hardship.

By food storage items, I mean like dry goods (beans, rice, pasta, oatmeal) properly stored and dry packed foods from Honeyville or LDS Cannery.

I might be well served to find a dom that is on food stamps as I am guessing that food stamps can buy pork & beans and lots of healthy foods with plenty of fiber & roughage....

We were on the card for 3 months during a financial/medical crisis. We actually did not use all of our monthly allotment and when I called and had them end our assistance I think we still had like $400 on the card. I am glad there are safety nets like this in place, I just wish there were something that could be done so that you could not by unhealthy stuff with it, and a separate amount that could only be used on fresh fruits and veggies.

I now give can good monthly to our local food bank. People may be surprised at who actually needs food subsidies so they can live.

My brother is disabled and gets about $130 per month. He doesn't add well in his head and if he doesn't have enough money or forgot that things like toilet paper are not covered gets flusters and will abandon his groceries unless I am there to pay the balance (for which he reimburses me.)

I do think that essentials like toilet paper should be covered and non essentials like soda not covered, but I realize this may not be workable.

What do food stamps buy?

The U.S. public can only guess as the USDA refuses to provide the information.

...There are two categories of information being withheld, each for a different reason.

First is the question of food purchases. What foods are people buying with their SNAP benefits? How much of the SNAP budget is going for fruits and vegetables and how much for soft drinks and snack foods? No one knows. Here, Congress is the culprit: It has not given the USDA the authority to collect product-specific information, even though it would be easy to do so in an era of bar codes and EBT cards.

Second is the question of how much money individual retailers collect from the program. The Agriculture Department routinely collects this information; the agency knows precisely how much SNAP pays each of the nearly 247,000 grocers, gas stations, convenience markets, liquor stores and big-box stores that accept food stamps. But the agency will not reveal the numbers, citing tortured legal arguments that federal law and regulations prohibit such disclosures. In at least two instances (in Oklahoma and Massachusetts), state officials did release this information about vendors, and the USDA later chastised them for it.

In the absence of public information on what SNAP dollars buy and where they are spent, vital decisions are made in darkness. In 2010, the USDA denied New York City's request to ban the purchase of soft drinks with food stamps — all without it having any solid information about the amount and cost of such products sold to SNAP recipients.

In the meantime, another federal agency, the Department of Health and Human Services, is spending billions of dollars to combat childhood obesity, which is affected by diet and disproportionately afflicts children living in poverty. And the American Medical Assn. has weighed in, pledging in June to work for a ban on the use of food stamps to buy sugary drinks.

Not everyone tho has proper kitchen facilities- it is easy to say buy certain things- but if they will spoil or simply not eaten- no point on that.

I didn't even have electricity when I was in Costa Rica - so no refrigeration - just took planning.

Give it a rest, will you? Preferably permanently. Desperation is so unattractive.

To the OP: not on assistance myself, but I overheard a checker loudly and blatantly humiliating a SNAP customer in the next line. I went to the manager about it. I don't like folks abusing the welfare system, but I can guarantee this little family didn't belong in that category.

Not sure how to land a dome. What is this dome made of? Does the dome have some sort of engine? (thinking we have a UFO idea going here...)
