I know we don't know each other on a personal basis but if somehow it came to be your choice to name me what would you call me?

I need to pick a name for beauty school. They say if there is another stylist on the floor with the same name it could be confusing for clients during re-booking, so they'd like to avoid that by giving us a chance to come up with new names. I've been racking my brain but nothing really seems to fit. Any suggestions? Please be nice.

As much as I would like to help, you are right, I do not know you on any kind of level, which is no one's fault. And for those of us on the boards that dont know you, I cant see how we could help.

That being said, my advice is to talk to friends, consider a nick name you have, something along those lines. I wish you luck.

I think there's a good chance that someone who doesn't know me and just goes with their first impression would have some good ideas. Seeing as how clients won't know me either a name that isn't too personally associated might be something they'd have thought of too, if that makes any sense. A lot of my friends have had some good ideas, but who knows....maybe pulling something out of a hat will be just right

Oh, and it has to sound "professional" ...that said, my childhood nickname was Lambi and I think that's too cutesy. Strangely enough there is someone there named "Vintage" so I dunno exactly what the parameters for "professionalism" entail

Without knowing you, I wouldn't know a name that would suit you.

Have you considered looking through a book of names like those that perspective parents use when thinking of suggestions of what to name their baby? When I worked for the phone company quite a few years back, they had the same policy about no two representatives having the same name so that customers would have a unique first name for their reference. I was Eden (as in Garden of) for every call that I ever took for US West. The floor supervisor carried one of those 'name your baby' books so she would always have ideas for what to 'name' a new employee whenever someone new was hired.

Good idea, LadyPact. I'm actually surfing through some "Baby name finders" I picked on google. No luck yet

LP, you never cease to amaze me with your wisdom, and admittedly, your good looks. I actually never thought about a baby name book.

I would add AlluraVogue, that you take into any spiritual beliefs you may hold.

Your pic is evocative of Josephine Davis. So Josephine is a possibility.

Vintage is taken. How about Classic or Classy?

Either Muse itself or the name of a specific Muse.

When I wrote the above, I was thinking of your artistic side. But you have an athletic, energetic one as well. Along those lines, Lyta (short for Hippolyta), Atalanta, or Diana/Artemis?

Why not "Aphrodite"? in keeping with the Greek theme that Steven began. Unless I'm mistaken, she was the Goddess of beauty and knowledge? Surely, that can't be too common a name?

Good luck,

Vidal Sassoon

I'll throw this out there since, when I first read your SN, I immediately thought Aaliyah.
I've always loved that name.

That's the Greek name. I'd also suggest Venus, the Roman one.

From your profile is all I am going to get to know you quickly:

The nine muses—Clio, Thalia, Erato, Euterpe, Polyhymnia, Calliope, Terpsichore, Urania, Melpomene.

Read up on what each one was about, and pick your muse.

Cmon, girl, amuse me.

This is a name only for your time in school, right? It's not going to follow you throughout your career? So, don't think too hard on it. Just pick something that you've always kind of liked. Bill or George? Anything but Sue!

What about Mickey? You say you're a wanderer. (A Rolling Stone?) Or, bank on the chance that the other people with your name will pick something else, and keep your own.

I suspect the "professional" requirement is just a way to put the kibosh on names like Beast, or The Best Stylist on the Floor, or anything else they decide they don't like.

One name that I've always thought was a good one was Cassiopeia, from the Greek classics. I've only known a couple of ladies who've had it, probably because their parents couldn't spell it. It has a good shortened version, Cassie, and sounds very refined in its full tense.

I named my cat Cossette. I happen to like Les Miserables. There's also Eponine or Fantine.
