As some of you know, I have a mailing list that I use to send updates to the kind folks sharing my oncology adventures. Well, it's grown to the point that Yahoo Mail fears I'm spamming folks and won't send the message.

A friend who works there suggested creating a Yahoo Group instead. I did so. All went well till it came time to invite people. So far as I can tell--and yes, I even tried the Help(less) feature--there is no way to import an existing Yahoo mail list or to scroll through my contacts and click those who should get invitations.

No, you have to cut and paste each address. By hand. One hundred and two goddam times.

I cannot believe that, in 2013, a Web interface could be so fucking pathetic. What a bunch of bloody wankers, to borrow from our British friends.

Thanks for e-listening.

P.S. I tried Google too, but that's just as lame.

Why not do it in smaller groups, like 5 emails to 20?

Here's to your peaceful recovery.

I do believe they can go to your group and request an invite themselves. That way you don't need to cut and paste, just send out the group address to them and they take it from there

Thanks! I'll give that a try.

I haven't personally verified the last step works as advertised, but at least it doesn't look like you actually have to copy and paste addresses individually.

You can get a text file with all your existing contacts from Yahoo:
Mail > Contacts > Actions > Export All… > Yahoo! CSV: Export Now

Using a spreadsheet program to open the CSV file, you can select just the addresses for the contacts you want, then copy those addresses into a text file. Each address should be on a separate line.

Again in Yahoo, go to Groups > YourGroupName > Invite
The invite page claims to allow you to invite up to 100 addresses at once – just copy and paste from the text file.

Of course, all this good techie advice is coming AFTER you've done the cut and paste to send the invitations...

I posted the following in the Admit thread, not sure if you saw it:

dcnovice, have you heard of or considered using Caring Bridge? We've used it for family members in the past. It's like a health blog that only your personal subscribers can see. It takes away having to email everyone and deal with distro lists, etc.

A> Yahoo frequently gets hacked. A month doesn't go by that someone that has my email address gets hacked and sends spam and viral attachments to all they know.
B> Virus scanners cannot protect a web based email account. It has to be done at the server level and Yahoo just doesn't do a good job.

Suggestions:
1> Use a real email address and not a web based IMAP account. If you have internet at home; you have a POP email account with your ISP and possibly more than one. My ISP gives you eight mailboxes with your internet service. Use real email.
2> If for some reason you cannot fathom why a POP email account makes more sense than an IMAP only account; get a Gmail address. Google at lease pays a passing nod to security.

Internet 101 sidebar:
IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) is used by servers that keep all your email on the server and you only access them by an interface program such as a web browser. Good side, accessible from ANY computer. Downside, accessible from ANY computer and anyone with server password access can access your email and it is never actually ever deleted. Examples of IMAP email service are Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo mail.
POP (Point of Presence) protocol refers to email service where your messages are held in your mailbox until you download them to your own computer. Some services offer retention options on the server and with some companies you can set how far back you want your email retained on the server. Some ISPs have virus scan built into the POP server so you never see a lot of the bulk mail, spam, and malicious emails. (Earthlink does good job with this). Examples of POP service email include Earthlink, ATT, Verizon. Comcast uses a hybrid version of Yahoo and has many of the disadvantages of both.
