Columbo was a police lieutenant, not a PI.

And on the OP, Benton Fraser, obviously.

Definitely Sledge Hammer was cool but Charles Bronson as police inspector Paul Fein in Family of Cops gets my vote because, if I had to look like some other than myself, I want that big as life twice as ugly look I am already used to.

How about Hercule Poirot? The thirties was a cool era.

Ziva David from NCIS, but I also like Jane Rizzoli because I get the blunt Massachusetts girl that is halfway between Tom Boy and Girly Girl.

Anyone on Hill Street Blues, because Lt. Fiorello was awesome.

Hercule's police career remains shrouded in mystery.. as a PI, he would probably have a stroke if you called him a cop.

Inspector Lynley, from the British TV series, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. What a hunk!

Okay, if you're gonna include private detective characters now, who else here thinks that Jessica Fletcher was a serial killer? I mean, seriously, everywhere that woman went, people turned up dead. From the Wikipedia article "...Murder occurred with such regularity in her vicinity that the term "Cabot Cove syndrome" was coined to describe the constant appearance of dead bodies in remote locations.[9] A 2012 study of episodes found that Cabot Cove had a murder rate of 1,490 per million, more than 50 per cent higher than Honduras, which has the real world's highest murder rate.[10]...". Kinda makes you wonder, huh? Dexter has nothing on her...

What about Foyles War? The 40s were cool too [:)].

We loved that show. Micheal Kitchen can eat chips in my bed any night of the week. As could Morse.

I loved Morse, and am enjoying his pre-quell Endeaver as well.

As far as personality, I somewhere between Emma Peale from The Avengers and Miss Marple (don't laugh!) Miss Marple looks all fluffy, but she's smart!

Hi ChatteParfaitt,

Honour Blackman always did it for me!

Who would I want to be, or whom would I want to play, or whom would want to hang out with?

When I think about it, none of my favorite TV police detectives have enviable lives.

Everyone Bobby Goren from Criminal Intent has ever been close to since childhood, is scary crazy, except his partner.

Charlie Crewes from that NBC series, Life, starts off the story finally released after having been a policeman locked up for years, framed for the murder of friends, and has just barely hung onto his sanity (maybe).

D.I. Dave Creegan, from the BBC series, Touching Evil, begins his story having recently been killed (and resuscitated) by a criminal he was pursuing.

Jane Tennyson from Prime Suspect is constantly working uphill against an old boys network, while leading a blighted love life and hitting the bottle too hard.

Dr. "Fitz" Fitzgerald...I don't remember whether he finally became an official police psychologist (psychiatrist?) or just pinch hit for them, but in his private life, he has every degenerate habit available, and (therefore) a miserable family life.

The new incarnation of Will Graham, from the recent series Hannibal, is just a tortured rack of meat who shouldn't trust anyone.

There is Columbo. A career police detective with a family life - what a concept! Definitely one of my all-time faves. Still, I don't feature myself as the guy in the rumpled raincoat and the dirty car, chewing on a cigar, haha.

I'm pretty sure that Crewes would be the most fun to hang out with, though.

So, I don't really have an answer to the question at hand. I just like thinking about some of my favorite detectives, as these are some of my over-all favorite series and characters.
