There's a place for it, but not on every thread, and certainly not to drown out what otherwise could have been a perfectly good discussion. We need more thoughtful threads. We do not need more random stupidity.

A number of people complained and cloudboy's thread was locked. I guess what galls me is that it could have generated good discussion and had a unique angle that was not being discussed elsewhere. Personally, I think it was obvious why that thread was different (notwithstanding the fact that buried somewhere in those other 1300 posts there may have been one or two that actually related to the topic that he started). I believe it was clearly different than the other threads and should have been let stand. I was surprised to see that the heckling comments were not pulled as off-topic, and that the thread itself was locked for the reason given, which was that it was merely a duplicate of other ongoing threads.

Wrong. Cloud boys questions were answered on a thread that is STILL alive and kicking. What kinda dumb shit would that be to start the same thread? Apparently the mods agreed.

I'm pretty sure this is one of the first, if not the only, randomly stupid thread I've ever made... If theres a way to search for threads that I've created, I encourage you to go and have a read, I'm always trying to raise the bar by making what I hope are thoughtful threads.

Have to agree with this. I have a hard time believing that anybody could think that in the course of 1300 posts on the subject, every single one of them *only* pertained to the original and none of the surrounding material was covered. There were literally three threads on the subject of fin domination (two of which were in the top five topics on the General board) when the fourth one was created. The forum guidelines even tell folks to look to see if there is a current topic on the board.

I can't recall too many threads with 13 posts in which every post pertained to the original and none of the surrounding material was covered, much less 1300.
