Okay, some dogs are born mean, and people turn around and blame the breed or one of the breeds in the mix. It could be pit, rottie, mastif, german shepherd, but it has something to do with breeding.

Well people, let me tell you folks a few facts.

Hundreds of dogs of a variety of breeds die each year in staged dog fights.

I am listed with the local dog rescue group, which means I get both local and state requests for fostering rescued animals. I average 10 to 15 notices about dogs that have been rescued from abusive owners. Dogs that have been beaten to the point of being frightened of any human, regardless of size. Dogs that have been tied up so long that their collars have to be surgically removed from their necks. Dogs that have been burned with cigarettes, set on fire, had caustic chemicals thrown on them.

Thousands of dogs are rescued each year from abusive owners according to records, hundreds of thousand of dogs are just turned loose by owners not wanting them anymore, and still more are euthanized in dog pounds.

People want to euthanize or outlaw aggressive dog breeds, fine.

Today I want to euthanize abusive and neglectful dog owners, dog fighters, and the "wonderful" people who just get tired of a pet and turn it loose to fend for itself, I will settle for outlawing them, maybe life in prison.

Of course, people are not the problem, according to some folks, it is the dogs.

I was a volunteer at a local no-kill shelter for a few years. I worked with the rehabilitator and started to work with just the aggressive dogs. During five years we had 2 out of a few hundred aggressive dogs that could not be rehabilitated. Those two were sent to some farm for dogs in Virginia.

Even dogs that may be a bit more aggressive can be controlled so they are no longer aggressive through diet, routine, and keeping them away from triggers.

One of my last ones was a Rottie that someone had knocked most of it's teeth and and it had a broken jaw that had healed incorrectly. After the corrective surgery for the jaw, and a few months of rehabilitation a family actually adopted it. I saw pics of it a year ago and Zeus was fat, happy and had kids crawling and laying all over him.

People are to blame period. Tougher penalties for being abusive or training dogs to be aggressive, as well as enforced neuter/spay programs unless someone pays for a breeders license would help a lot.

In total agreement with this. I assist with pit and other breed rescues and the things we see people do to these animals is atrocious. The penalties are not enough deterrent to make it stop. And these dogs (the ones that actually make it out of the shelter without being euthanized) end up loving family pets, grateful to have a good home.

Dog aggression is usually fear driven. What other means do they have to protect themselves, when all they have known is abuse?

commotion on my block this week- new people - trash moved in - lied to the landlord about everything- including having 2 large dogs - one is a pit bull. In a weeks time that dog has bit cindy 2x. They never have their dogs on a leash. The dog is scratching thru the wall to get into cindys side of the duplex.

Bo and Lizard has Little Bit, a wired hair terrier that they rescued from an abusive situation and Sushi, a Japanese Chin mix. Both dogs are protective of their 'family'. Though I am not around all of the time, they have accepted me and give me dirty looks if I don't share my food (mainly beef rib bones).

My family is known for rescuing dogs as well, mainly from busted puppy mills. We don't have any pets because when we put Georgie to sleep, it really broke Mom's heart.

The problem is that certain breeds have a rep for being vicious dogs. So when trash people want to get a vicious dog, they get one of those breeds and train it to be vicious. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I used to be active on a landlord board, and there were certain breeds that the landlords banned because they'd lose insurance if any of those dogs were owned by their tenants. But the lowlifes who'd make a dog vicious were the same kind who'd sneak them in anyway.

We had a shepherd that turned mean. Inbreeding to get that long back meant that the breed became susceptible to hip dysplasia. And being in pain can cause them to bite.

Just to point out another reason for dogs biting.

I'll agree, it's people. Trash people especially who regard their animals as either a status symbol or little more than a delaying tactic for when the cops inevitable show up to check their extracurricular activities.
