http://www.examiner.com/article/dea-raids-seattle-on-medical-marijuana-shops-what-s-wrong-with-this-picture I feel the Federal Government has overstepped its bound's here. Marijuana for both Medical and Personal is perfectly legal in Washington State. Yet, Marijuana in any form is still illegal under Federal law. So the question is, where is the "line in the sand" drawn when it comes to the Federal Government deciding to ignore the laws of a state, which was voted in by the voter? Unlike old "Jim Crow" laws of the South, where there was a need for Federal Government intervention. Here, no one's Human Rights are violated by the State. If anything, its the Federal government violating someone's Human Right's. Plus, what a complete waste of tax dollars being used here in a state where something is perfectly legal.

Federal law trumps state law. Anyone who thinks state legalization and medical marijuana is going to just walk through without a whisper of response from the feds is either stupid to begin with, or getting and staying WAY too high.

This is civil disobedience on a grand scale. There are personal risks and there will be casualties. As a participant in the effort, I certainly hope it is going to get us to a better place, with regard to the ridiculous drug policies currently on the federal books, but the fight is still just getting started.

So much for another promise-this time that the feds wouldn't interfere with states on this issue

I think things like this could, and maybe should, lead to some new discussions regarding states rights.

Now there's something that *all* the ultra right wing neo-con, state's righters can get behind.

'Keep the government out of our medicines, the way Ronald Reagan would have wanted it,'... right?

Personally, I don't really give a rat's ass what the ultra right wing thinks. This is what I think.

I totally agree.. except for it being civil disobedience.. I think there are people that really do need pot to help them with their various medical conditions..

The Feds have always been quite rabid about pot (no matter who the puppet Prez was).. in Canada we would get a few American pot charge dodgers.. and some of them needed pot for medical reasons.. but they really only get a temporary stay of jail time, they are usually eventually sent back to the US & the US throws them in jail..

There was a Canadian activist that never stepped one foot into the US, he was selling pot seeds by mail and the DEA wanted him bad.. he was in the DEA Top 10 Most Wanted "drug kings" & all he did was sell pot seeds.. the US finally was able to get him extradited to serve 5 years in a US jail.. just for selling pot seeds (no one in Canada gets charged for that!)..

But ya know, if they accuse someone of a drug offense in the US (they dont even need to charge them), they do the asset forfeiture thing and profit from their theft.. In the US you can so easily be accused of a crime you never committed cuz you have some asset or cash they want to take.. Few people can fight them when they have no money left to hire a lawyer to get their assets back or defend themselves if they are charged.. So the Federal (& local) govt needs the war on drugs (including pot) simply cuz of asset seizure.. So anyone thinking its gonna change is kidding themselves..

Why is needing and obtaining a prohibited substance for medical reasons exclusive from being an act of civil disobedience, Tj? I don't see the conflict.

And yeah, maybe I, and millions of others, are kidding ourselves. The problem for the government is that they cannot 'fess up that it's about money and federal jobs programs. They have to stick to the "drugs are bad" paradigm, in an atmosphere where the percentage of the population who know marijuana horror stories are bullshit gets a fraction bigger every time an old person dies, and a teenager reaches voting age.

We aren't there yet. It isn't going to be pretty sometimes, but I think it's a fight worth having, and I think meaningful change is possible. I doubt I'll see the night where I can run inside a roadside gas station and grab a couple tabs of pharmaceutical grade methamphetamine to keep me going the next six hours to my destination, or pick up some psilosybin mushrooms at the liquor store on Friday, but I don't think buying milk and a twin-pack of joints down at the Kwik-E-Mart is an impossible dream.

When did "the feds" make such a promise? For that matter, who are you referring to by "the feds" in this case?

The President did say something to that effect.

Obama, being the good socialist he is is protecting workers. The workers on the boards of big pharma are terrified of tpeople discovering that you can grow medicines in the ground.

You may not see the conflict but I see it as asking the question of why a person wants/needs pot.. if they answer that it helps them with their medical condition then its not about civil disobedience for that person.. for others, if they want to smoke a joint in front of a cop and blowing the smoke in his/her face then that is most definately civil disobedience.. Civil disobedience imo needs to be public in some way or its like a tree falling in the forest.. if no one hears the tree falling so does it make a sound? If no one knows you are smoking pot then how would anyone know you are being disobedient?

If you really want to do that and have the feeling of freedom from being arrested & its important to you, then imo you should just move to a country where they are sane and dont arrest anyone for that minor offense.. Imo, you have this one life, you should do as much as you can to enjoy it.. so go to where you are able to live your life as you want to and to its fullest.. As far as that goes, Canada isnt far away and in BC especially, the govt doesnt want to waste its tax dollars prosecuting pot smokers (who are basically law abiding otherwise) & if you have a medical condition then you can legally smoke and grow a few plants (with the proper medical card (or whatever its called).. If you want to grow hemp as a farmer its legal to do there also (with a govt permit).. Farmers in the US still cant grow hemp! Not that I am personally complaining cuz its one of Canada's exports to the US.. I would feel differently if I was an American farmer tho..

Back in November of 200something, Obama directed the DEA that marijuana was their dead last priority in states that allowed it. The Acapulco Gold Rush was on in Colorado after that.

There was a single bust of an egregious grower by the DEA with nary a peep from Obama, and the Colorado industry took a serious step back. Today, 80% of what was grown legally has been stopped (to be fair, the state legislators' obstructionist regulations played a huge part), and I assume has been replaced with illegal mj.

Obama really blew it with that one.

Human rights are irrelevant here. The War on Drugs is big business, plain and simple. From the trial lawyers who make bank on defending cases all the way down to the merchants who sell fuel and equipment to the government, there is a whole industry that relies on keeping marijuana illegal, and nothing anyone says or does is going to change that.

You are still smoking in illegal substance, regardless of who knows it or not. If you were to raid a gub'mint pharmacy for medications you need, is that an act of civil disobedience, or is it simply breaking the law? According to the Fed's, medical marijuana isn't legal, Rx or not.
