36 Photos From Russia That Everyone Needs To See

The above article's supposition is seriously biased about what this means for gay athletes and spectators, but I understand the concern. Although postured . . . like saying what happens to Jewish athletes if Germany hosts or black athletes if US hosts the Olympics, but the time line and the current active stance against gays is noteworthy. Recently Duma gave its final approval to a bill banning “the promotion of non-traditional sexual relationships,” in a move widely criticized by gay rights activists and human rights groups around the world.

* April 16 2013 - draft law and related amendments to Russian family law were passed by Russia’s lower house of parliament
* June 2013 - Russian lawmakers amended the family law and passed a bill banning same-sex foreign couples from adopting Russian children (Link)
* June 21 2013 - Putin signs "anti-gay propaganda" bill into law
* July 2013 - Dutch citizens were tried in Moscow for a “gay propaganda” crime (link)

I understand the 36 pictures and the concern because while the US legalizes gay marriage and France legalizes gay marriage making it the 9th to do so in Europe, Russia is very actively anti-gay. It's nothing like the "don't ask, don't tell" atmosphere we had.

God shit like that pisses me off!

I hate fascists (in my opinion anyone who beats on others just because they are different are fucking fascists)!

I don't like to hate (it make my soul feel filthy) so it doubly pisses me off!

I admit though that I am divided on the issue of whether we should boycott the upcoming Olympics. It seems grossly unfair to the athletes for the government to deny them what they have been working so hard for just to make some political points (I've never forgiven Carter for doing it).

If an individual athlete were to boycott that would be different since they are making their own choice. I would, in fact, applaud such courage.

However, I think a better idea would be to attend the Olympics and wear protest clothing, carry protest signs during the opening and closing ceremonies (gay athletes kissing each other would be even better) and for the athletes to make their feelings known when interviewed by the media.

I don't think the Russian authorities would do anything. They wouldn't fucking dare! Not with the whole world watching! and if they did, can you imagine the blowback? Whoo boy!

Agreed.

Excellent idea! Visibility is a key tool for change.

Russia has always been aggressively anti-gay, what with its cult of rugged homophobic machismo and perpetual problems that cause people to turn on the least powerful minority. This isn't a new development. The main difference is that now protesters can document the abuse and post it online. That wasn't really an option 10-15 years ago.

Perhaps not culturally, but Putin's been signing new antigay laws fairly often lately.

On July 3, Mr. Putin signed a law banning the adoption of Russian-born children not only to gay couples but also to any couple or single parent living in any country where marriage equality exists in any form.

A few days earlier, just six months before Russia hosts the 2014 Winter Games, Mr. Putin signed a law allowing police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian or “pro-gay” and detain them for up to 14 days. Contrary to what the International Olympic Committee says, the law could mean that any Olympic athlete, trainer, reporter, family member or fan who is gay — or suspected of being gay, or just accused of being gay — can go to jail.

Earlier in June, Mr. Putin signed yet another antigay bill, classifying “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. The law is broad and vague, so that any teacher who tells students that homosexuality is not evil, any parents who tell their child that homosexuality is normal, or anyone who makes pro-gay statements deemed accessible to someone underage is now subject to arrest and fines. Even a judge, lawyer or lawmaker cannot publicly argue for tolerance without the threat of punishment.

Finally, it is rumored that Mr. Putin is about to sign an edict that would remove children from their own families if the parents are either gay or lesbian or suspected of being gay or lesbian. The police would have the authority to remove children from adoptive homes as well as from their own biological parents.

It's a common trend in dirt-poor countries with a lot of potential for social unrest: the Powers That Be find a convenient scapegoat or a minority that can't fight back (Jews in Hitler's Germany, for example) and unite everyone against them... Most people fairly easily manipulated.

Even before Putin's latest anti-LGBT laws, coming out of the closet in Russia would have most likely resulted in physical violence and at the very least harassment.

I am old enough to know what is best, so here goes;

If you are a Woman do not go to Dubai, or any Arab state.

If you are Gay, do not go to Russia or any anti-Gay state.

If you are an Arab do not go to Israel.

If you are a Jew do not go to Iraq or Iran.

This list is not exhaustive. This entity suggests you learn about and understand the customs and laws of places that you intend to visit or to emigrate for any prupose. This entity also suggests that in these uncertain financial times, that you do not travel abroad for something that only has the importance of a sporting event. This entity also recommends that you consider the unimportance of which athletes can throw or run farther or faster in the grand scheme of things. This entity also suggests that you stop going into deeper debt to support a system that pays people more to play than to work.

Keep it up, and then we can just close all the schools and turn them into sports arenas.

Thousands of dollars to go to a fucking soccer game ? Beam me up Scotty.

T^T
