Is 'Fifty Shades' to blame for rise in handcuff emergencies?

quote:

The bestselling erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey" may have done more than spice up readers' love lives.

Firefighters in London say it could be to blame for a rise in the emergency calls from people stuck in all kinds of awkward situations -- some involving handcuffs.

Read the rest here.

And this is why so many people here hate that book.

One of my favorite ebay sellers from England had Fifty Shades on special for 50 pence...all their copies sold out within 2 hours.

If you're gonna play with something, learn how it works: Practice Handcuff Lockpicking Set. Also, spare cuff keys aren't hard to come by, and it's not that difficult to keep a spare on your keyring. I've carried an emergency key for almost twenty-five years now and I have a lockpicking set in my "fun bag". The club I worked for had this huge ring of cuff keys for everything from S&Ws to the antique darbies people would show up with.

I just don't get it. Why would a book suddenly motivate people to experiment? Sure, this one received A LOT of publicity, but I sort of figured most people have used handcuffs at least once. You sure they just haven't been having really good sales on them lately? (I'm only kidding about the sales)

It's funny, because when I suggested that handcuffs were not a good restraint choice for a first time take down/rape scene because of the injuries they can cause...two Uber Doms told me I was wrong.

All I can say is my thoughts about people just keep proving me right more each day.

It would be tough to pick the lock (or even open it with a key) if you locked them behind your back with the keyholes facing the wrong way, away from your fingers. That's especially true if they decided they were hardcore and started playing with hinged handcuffs. They severely limit your hand movements and make it impossible to escape if you can't reach the keyhole with your fingers. And even then, it takes some practice to stick the key in and turn it.

Because people are stupid and because 50 Shades seems like the likeliest catalyst.

I highly, highly doubt that. 15-20% of the population (which includes the elderly, the Mormons, the puritans, etc) tops.
