it's a fish joke!

don't know about you, but the fishmonger's sell them here for dinner :)

Thanks for the link but I only eat tuna (out of cans) and catfish and large-mouth bass that I catch. Other than that or my wet friends, I don't know much about fish (except sharks, which I used to study extensively).

Holy mackerel, I didn't know you didn't get the roughy pun. That was the sole reason I threw it out there, just for the halibut.

Hmmmm Your puns are pretty fishy. Perhaps you should scale them down?

I apologize if the title was a bit mis-leading but, allow me to explain:

I moved into a new place 02 APR and my landlord didn't want pets but, he gave the okay for me to keep fish.

I already had my Betta, Mr. West, and I was (obviously) able to keep him but I have also been re-visiting my old hobby of keeping fresh water tropicals (guppies, neon tetras, and cory catfish for now).

I have a half a metric shit-ton of guppy babies. These damned things will mate in a mud puddle during an earthquake and I don't seem to be able to keep the pregnant females in the main tank and just "let nature do what it does". So, I've been saving a bunch of fry.

Anyway, about three weeks ago, Mr. West was dying. He kept his fins matted down, spent almost all of his time on the bottom of the tank and dashed to the surface for air, occasionally (they have a labyrinth organ). I was freaked and while I've had Bettas, before, I had never really had one get sick and I was scared to death.

I test the water in all my tanks, every day and my water is always damn-near perfect. Water/ammonia/pH/metals levels are all great. I keep him in a 5 gallon tank. I'm not one of these people that keeps them in the cup that the pet store received them in.

I got into gear and I saved him and now, he's not only strutting around the tank with his fins spread out like an aquatic peacock but, he's developed a new habit that I've never seen before (I've kept a few Bettas). He likes to be petted like a kitty cat. Yep, you heard me. I stick my finger in the tank and he swims up and swims back and forth while I run my finger down his side.

I was so proud of myself for saving him and so blown away by this behavior that I made a video and posted it (I'll add the link, at the end, for those that care or are curious).

I do have a question for anyone that has successfully mated a Betta. I am looking for input on the best methods. I don't want to put him and another fish in those little-assed "Betta tanks" if I can avoid it.

Anyway, I'd appreciate any constructive, non-condescending advice.

Pas,

Jacque Cousteau

Okay....I think fish tanks are the stupidest damn pet thing in the world....they can't get your slippers, they don't come and squirm around your head...but I'm all about helping helpless little animals and such....and you didn't say HOW you saved your fishee.....how'd you do it?

Well, I changed 20% of the water, eight times per day because I added some aquarium salt, every fourth change.

I lifted him up to the top of the water every three minutes for about 6 hours because he was having trouble taking oxygen from the water and swimming to the top, himself.

I fed him by hand (although they only eat twice per week) because he was so sick, he couldn't be bothered.

I don't need him to squirm around my head (I always hated when my cats got near my face). I don't need him to get my slippers (my lad does that very well and might even get upset at her loss of station if it stopped). He (as much as I have seen any fish) shows his appreciation by treating me like an equal by actually swimming up to my finger and "initiating" tender, physical, contact.

And, I'm gonna get him laid. Win-Win situation.

Peace,

Heidi Fleiss

Can you get pics of the bubble nest if you get him to mate. Never seen one up close.

Probably three computers ago, I had some photos of a bubble nest. It was my first Betta and up to that point, I had only ever dealt with live-bearers. So, I took some photos, asking my friends and people at the pet store: "WTF?!?!?!?!?!"

In preparation of trying to mate this guy, I've been doing some reading/research and it appears that these fish are almost as individual as us folks.

Some males build nests, all the time. Some males build nests after the mating actually occurs. Some build nests, once a female is introduced and some build them if a female happens to swim by their proximity.

My first priority is to successfully mate this guy but I will try to get video of the events, as they happen.

I am kind of looking forward to posting the results here for you guys, as well.

Regards,

Larry Flynt

For proper balance, you should now train a cat to act like a fish.

It's my understanding the male keeps the bubble nest going for 2 or 3 days until the fry are ready to swim free so hopefully you can grab some shots.

Be better off asking for fish porn. Anything with 'child' in it gets flagged, it seems. (Hi, Mods!)

I don't know, DS. I have always had trouble getting cats to NOT tear up the damned furniture; which make me want to throw them in the water ... Hmmmm ...

I did have one cat that used to venture into the bathtub with me but it turned out that she was a bit ... hmmmm ... "special" as cats go.

My cat, a Maine Coon, was bathed since kitten hood and she likes playing in water now. I have to latch the door when I shower and keep the lid down on the toilet.

I use to keep Bettas and goldfish when Lizard was a kid. Now she is content with 4 dogs and a wandering cat.

Damn, they are going to have to move next weekend. Someone get the nip out to catch the cat...

Yeah. I've been keeping bettas - on and off (mostly on) for ten years. I've had them come up near my fingers when it's feeding time but I have never experienced this.

I've just started to get back into the fresh water tropicals (guppies, tetras, etc.) and it's like I never stopped (although the newer females are pretty freakin' aggressive, I've found).

I am going to go to a 50 gallon and keep the 20 for a mating tank and the two tens for hospital/quarantine tanks.

The 50 gallon will be ready to roll by my birthday and I'm going to go with less fish and just breed what I need. There's a local pet store that will take the fish I don't want. I know I have at least one VERY agressive female guppy (I've caught her, in the act, nipping at the tails of two males).

My thing, right now, is that I would really like to mate my betta and I've done some reading and such but there's seems to be no sure-fire "right way". I think I need a twue fish breeder to post here

Anyway, I'll be posting a new video on Sunday, me thinks since I have to run back out to New Jersey, tomorrow.

Regards,

Road Runner

I promised you guys that I would keep you updated so, here it is:

I got a really pretty female for Mr. West on Sunday (18 AUG).

The only person I've met, face-to-face told me that the female was in no danger until after mating so, after letting the two of them "get acquainted" for about 90 minutes on Sunday evening, I just put her in the tank and watched them for about 3 hours. There was no dangerous agression shown so ...

So far, Mr. West has not made a bubble nest but I'm told that some males don't until after they shake the eggs out of the female so, I'm hoping I'm doing the right thing.

I took a few photos but I think I'm only allowed one per post so I will post them as I get them sized down.

Here's the first; Mr. West, showing off.
