We originally planned to wait until after college to avoid financial aid marriage penalties. When cancer was discovered, I received temporary Medicaid. Once my treatment ended, I learned I would be dropped from Medicaid. To keep continuous coverage and therefore avoid possibly becoming permanently uninsurable due to a pre-existing condition (nobody knew at that time if the ACA would make it), we quickly married. We love each other and planned to marry eventually anyway. The threat of being uninsurable due to a pre-existing condition just sped up the process.

A retired family member is the one getting the divorce. His freeloading wife refused all affection for years and was having an affair with the neighbor. Feeling lonely, unloved, and unappreciated, he started having romantic online conversations with a woman from overseas he's never met. The chance to meet the woman in person and the fact that his wife had started degrading him in front of other people in addition to her affair led to him filing for a divorce. His attorney recommended having her thrown out and he went along with it. Now she refuses to speak to him and discuss splitting assets and is saying let the attorneys and judge work it out. If judges won't do that, his assets could be frozen for years! She has been telling people she plans to take everything he has. Since assets are split between divorcing spouses without children, the only way she could get everything is to drag the divorce out until he dies (they're both retired), right? I'm worried that is her plan.

If she won't mediate then his only choice is to let the attorneys and judge work it out.
