I am currently in the middle of three books: An unexpurgated version of "Les Miserables," "Computer Systems: Design and Concepts," and "Fifty Shades Darker." The first is rather dense and really needed an editor. There are like 20 pages on the Battle of Waterloo that have nothing to do with the story. It does not advance the narrative at all. The second is actually a textbook on computer processors. Hardly light reading. The third is absolutely painful to read. Friday night she pinches her cheeks to bring some color to them because she doesn't know how to use makeup. Saturday night she dresses in style and does herself up in very subtle makeup. WTF? In my defense (why do I have to justify what I am reading?) I promised my ex that I would read it because she found it to be a great series. I told her the first book sucked but she told me that it gets better. She was wrong.

Maybe your ex wanted to get you to read the Fifty Shades book because she is an extreme sadist. Or just an eclectic sense of humor? I'm reading Art of War now because I'm the only lawyer I know who hasn't read it. Another book with hitches in the narrative giddyup.

I read the Darkness one last weekend, it was truly crap writing.

I will admit to having read all 3 of those books. But then again, I'm a masochist! They do not get better. In fact, the last book is so awful it moved me to tears for the total waste of paper [:'(] I've just finished reading 'World War Z'. I was told it was nothing like the bog-standard 'end of the world and a guy with muscles' movie. I'm glad I listened to that advice - the book was rather good. Next up I'm going to read a book by one of my fave crime writers, Val McDermid (the author of 'wire in the blood'). I went to a public lecture she gave and got a signed copy of 'vanishing point'. Can't wait to start it!

"World War Z" was great. It was completely different than any other apocalypse novel I've ever read - and I read a lot. For those who haven't read it: It is actually done as a series of interviews with people who survived. The overall narrative is well conceived and actually comes through in a bunch of small personal stories. It is well worth a read. I would actually put it in the top 500 novels I've ever read. That is saying something. Mostly what it is saying is, "Dude! Get a girlfriend instead of reading all the time!"

Agreed. World War Z is win. Shame the movie is Brad Pitt vs. Zombies.

What? Didn't think "Fifty Shades" was the end all of BDSM? I did start it, got about a chapter in and that's where I left it.

My daughter wants me to get her the book...I might be sadistic at times but I won't even do that to my own daughter. I'll get her an Amazon card instead...for a Kindle.

Ahhh ... as painful (and not in a good way) as it was reading them (I still wince when I think about the books) they made me appreciate real life. [:)]

Personally I have renamed the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy to "Fifty Shades of Bad Writing."

The Man bought it after all the hype. I think he may have made 20 pages. I made 3. Someone told me it gets better when you're about 150 pages into the series. I'm never going to make it to that point. Virgin gets into helicopter to go to strange city for date without any way of getting home as she can't afford airplane. Signs sex slave contract before he even kisses her and she knows she wants to have sex with him. That, in three pages, was enough for me to throw it down in disgust.

People I know that have read the great trilogy all seem to say the last book is the most awful of the three. Les Miserables is written in the manner of most nineteenth century novels. People had different attention spans and sensibilities in those days. It's ok to skim here or there. But there's some beautiful writing in the book. Agree about World War Z, really good book.

I have never read it, but considering what I have heard about the writing, I probably wont. My suggestion is read "The Story of O"

I met WWZ author Max Brooks several years ago at Wizard World Philly and he stopped just shy of explicitly disavowing the movie. He kept saying things like "I have no input" and "They didn't listen to me," so I refused to see the movie based on that alone. I read the book some time after that and thoroughly enjoyed it. When I saw the first trailer that made WWZ nothing more than a vanity project for Brad Pitt, that just confirmed my worst fears.
