How much research did they have to do to find that one.

I don't know. It took me maybe a minute on Google.

That said, I still think it's a goofy restriction.

ETA: What struck me as truly sad vis-a-vis the brown-bag test was that it was mostly used by African Americans themselves.

Funny about the brown bag thing. I would venture a guess that more Whites brown bag than Blacks.

Retrograde research, you knew were it ended so you had the easy path.
Why would they have looked for it in the first place?

God only knows.

I'm guessing someone complained.

I can sort of see the citizens/residents point. Sort of.
I'd never heard about the "brown-bag" test, but apparently others have:
http://aaenvironment.blogspot.com/2008/03/environmental-racism-brown-paper-bag.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimination_based_on_skin_color#Brown_paper_bag_test
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=brown%20paper%20bag%20test
Always interesting to learn a new bit of history, even if it's sad.

From your first link (emphasis mine):
    quote:

Do whites use the brown paper bag test too? Do they favor lighter blacks? Think Colin Powell, Halle Berry, Barack Obama, Prince, Michael Jackson (both sides though), you get the idea. Are blacks darker than a brown paper bag discriminated against more than blacks lighter than a brown paper bag? There are notable exceptions: Condoleezza Rice, Vernon Jordan, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, James Clyburn and Michael Jackson.

They must be talking about the Jackson-5 era Michael Jackson...

Winterapple -> RE: New words to avoid (8/4/2013 8:44:08 PM)

I've known about the brown bag test for a longtime.
But, honestly it didn't come into my mind when I
read the OP. I was interested in attending an event
recently and in the info pack they sent me they said
you could bring a bag lunch if you wanted to

This event was taking place a long way from Seattle.
Lunch bags come in all sorts of colors these days maybe
saying brown bag is becoming archaic.[;)]

In Seattle, the terms 'citizen' and 'brown bag' are now offensive

'Citizen' and 'brown bag' are now offensive words, Seattle tells government employees.

http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/Blog/2013/08/02/In-Seattle-the-terms-citizen-and-brown-bag-are-now-offensive/3681375478745/?spt=hs&or=on

quote:

Public information officers for the City of Seattle have been advised to stop using the terms "citizen" and "brown bag" -- as in brown-bag lunch -- saying they could be offensive to some city residents.

Elliott Bronstein of the Office for Civil Rights circulated the memo encouraging government employees to avoid using the potentially offensive terms.

Instead of "brown-bag lunch," he suggests "sack lunch" or, for some inexplicable reason "lunch-and-learn," as in, "do you want to go out with us, or are you lunch-and-learning it?"

Given the Weiner scandal, I find "sack lunch" offensive....*sarcastic snort*

I remember attending, "brown bag seminars" while I was at the University. I also actually OWN and USE brown paper lunch bags. I think that we may be getting a little bit too PC these days.

Edited to add an "o."

Lol, fuckin' assholes!
Yeah, and it "could" snow tommorow too.
So,...the public information officers can't use those terms anymore? I'd have fun with them, "Hey Fellow Citizens, we're Brown-Bagging it for lunch tommorow at the park, you in?"
I think this goes a little further than "pc" into the realm of *ANAL-RETENTIVENESS.*
Was there a "committee" involved in this decision? And if so, how did it get started?

Termyn8or -> RE: New words to avoid (8/5/2013 6:21:58 PM)

This is so ridiculous that we either need a little levity or else go postal.

So the question is, would brown citizens bags be brown bags for citizens or bags for brown citizens ?

And then we can move on to the fact that most government workers can afford to go out for lunch. Many others cannot. You know, the citizens who pay their salary.

I have to assume that all "brown" citizens that are male, have brown bags. I'm not willing to do any research on that. It's just not my thing.

Warmest thanks, DS, for a much-needed laugh after an agonizing tenant-association meeting! [:)]

When brown bags are outlawed, only outlaws will have brown bags! [:D]

Marc2b -> RE: New words to avoid (8/6/2013 7:14:48 AM)

Are these the same people who (IIRC a story I heard some years ago) told their tech geeks not to use the term "slave" anymore (as in, computer A is slaved to computer B)? Or their electricians to stop referring to connectors as male and female?
