Put a audible ticking clock in the kittens bed. The sound is like moms heartbeat.

Don't overwhelm him, allow him to hide and discover his new home on his own.

Tell the cat jokes.

I'm serious. Jokes make your voice change a lot. He'll like it.

Well, just to report back. The kitten has been in our house now for over 48 hours. He is no longer hiding under the couch and already seems very well adjusted. He is navigating the stairs, finding the litter box and using it, and eating normally. His mood is upbeat.

From my end, I was actually starting to think I had made a mistake in committing to a kitten. I wasn't sure I was ready for a new pet. Well, those ideas proved to be misplaced. All is good. Having a new kitten is a blast and makes the household better.

Thanks for all the replies. All is good.

He's right. Magic tricks are completely wasted on a cat.

why didn't you go to a local cat sanctuary or pound, or whatever you call them over there and get an orphaned kitten rather than travel 100's of miles to get a kitten that I assume was being well looked after?

Is he/she some special kind of breed that overrides the needs of all the local cats being kept in bad conditions?
