Ritualistic cannibalism is one of the earliest forms of grieving for the dead, and as such could be considered a funeral practice. It seems gruesome to us, but is found throughout many cultures, past and present. Some quotes from the article "Ritual Cannibalism Among the Wari:" Anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski, who actually witnessed this type Melanesian ritual, described the act to be an "approved" collective means for individuals to express these feelings of grief and fear while still maintaining social cohesiveness, thus preventing disruption of society.
