they are taking public comments on changing the COLA on Soc Sec- to a stingier formula.

ShaharThorne -> RE: public comment SS COLA chained- here (8/6/2013 5:59:23 PM)

If they (Congress) is willing to take a 6 month deduction in pay in order to save SS...better yet, have the senators and congressmen survive on $1500 a month while the rest of their funds go into SS and cancel the high retirement funds, there will be monies to have a healthy COLA.

Chained CPI will likely drive me into true poverty over time. I'm already struggling with my disability income being only about 3/4 of what I averaged the last 10 years.

I certainly hear you.

Naturally, when you click the link to make comment, "Page not found".

What comment?

The choice is between starving the poor, or popping the cap and means testing. What makes (slowly) starving people a socially acceptable means to achieve our collective Social Security? What is it about expecting the rich to contribute the SAME PERCENTAGE to our Social Security the poor have to that makes the idea a non-starter? Was Social Security really invented to pay those who already collect over $100,000, as 7.2% of current beneficiaries do?

I wish I had a million dollar tax bill to punish me for succeeding. Do you think I'm kidding?

I was taught that if I didn't have anything nice to say, to not say anything at all. Boy, those people in Congress sure are snappy dressers.

Let it out, Gauge...I will even provide the cane!

Does paying those who have more, MORE, sound like a good way to alleviate poverty?

Wasn't alleviating poverty the goal of the program, to begin with? When did this change?

Thank you for considering my view.

Gauge -> RE: public comment SS COLA chained- here (8/6/2013 7:33:11 PM)

I will make a very general statement here and now about something political... which is against my self-imposed code of conduct for forums.

I love Congress. I love how they call Social Security an "Entitlement." As if living in poverty is living in the lap of luxury. As if being disabled is leading some sort of charmed life where it is all sunshine and roses and butterflies. As if some of the people who collect Social Security didn't pay their hard earned money into a fund that politicians have plundered and used for other things when the fund was never, ever intended to be used for anything but its original purpose. I love these politicians that continue to punish the poor while they line their own pockets with corporate money. I love the politicians that make decisions that hurt this country because they only care about the very few rather than the entire population of this country. I love how these politicians continue to exploit the division between Democrats and Republicans in order to continue to distract us from what is really going on which is that big government is out of control and merely a memory of what it was intended to do. I love how these politicians thwart what the Constitution stands for and what it says in favor of selling-out to the highest bidder the future of our children and the very nation itself. I love how Congress can collect their salaries and the best medical benefits in the world for the rest of their lives and can sit there with a straight face and call living in poverty an Entitlement.

The politics don't matter. The people matter. The politicians ignore the people. See the problem? May God help them if the people ever unite and tell the politicians that we have had enough pandering to special interests, your sole interest is what benefits those that elected you. You are supposed to serve the people, not the other way around.

Until people stop bickering amongst ourselves over meaningless things like gay marriage etc. and figure out that if we do not do something to find a common ground and demand that the politicians do their job the way they were intended to do, this country and everything it once stood for will have been destroyed before our eyes while we bickered, argued and fought over stupid things. Instead of bitching about what we don't agree on, how about some rational, level headed discussions about what we SHOULD ALL AGREE ON. This is why I do not talk politics.

DarkSteven -> RE: public comment SS COLA chained- here (8/6/2013 7:47:39 PM)

This is ridiculous.

The proper way is to say "We need to cut $50 billion dollars. Here are various ways we can do it..."

Instead, they're saying "We can cut SS. What's everyone think of that?"

Picking only a single way to save, and not presenting the upside of it is just stupid.

FR

You don't think they should take anything from the offence department to help people do you ?
