I just spent an enjoyable 45 minutes on my back porch watching my dogs play some ball game that seemed to be a mix of soccer, rugby, football.

There seemed to be no teams, as each dog worked to take the tennis ball from the dog that had the ball, who would toss it in the air and try to catch it before another dog got it, and took off running until they were tackled, or they tossed the ball in the air.

It seemed to be a game of attrition, as each dog tired they dropped out of the game and came up on the deck and watched the others play with me.

The game ended when Blu my pit/lab mix pup realized after 15 minutes of playing by himself that he was the only one playing.

Admittedly I should have either put down my coffee or my smokes and grabbed my phone to take pictures, but at 7 in the morning, Nicotine and Caffeine have a priority as a homicide prevention drug.

This thread is for the pet owners just to discuss the insane behavior of these wonderful partners we have.

Sounds like a great game.

We've had my dad's dogs staying with us for the last 2 months (home stretch now, thank God), and moments like you describe have kept us sane.

We put in a cat tree last week, and passed an enjoyable hour or so watching our evil cat dangling her tail and a paw out of the lower condo, trying to entice a dog into sticking a nose in.

I have two dogs; one is 14 and the other is just over 1 year so their games tend to be pretty short lived as the older dog gets tired much more quickly than the younger. One of the funniest things to watch though is when the older dog will instigate the younger into running around wildly ... She'll pretend to chase him at first and then come over and lay down at my feet while he continues running in circles until he realizes no one is actually behind him. You can almost see the embarassment on his face.

He's also known for digging DEEP holes in the back yard. He likes to drop his toys into these holes and then make a game of grabbing the toy out of the hole while on the run. Occassionally he misjudges and ends up face first in the hole, back legs still running in mid air.

My cat likes to get in on the games as well. She'll wait until the dogs are peacefully sleeping and then slowly sneak up just to BOP one on the face and then hide behind the couch where she can't be reached while the assaulted pooch barks in frustration. Or she'll creep out from the other end of the couch and curl up on my bed to nap while the dogs continue to bark ... At nothing.

We play soccer with our dog. He seems to enjoy kicking the ball to us.
One day, I was playing with the kids and he just joined in. He makes for a really great defender!

Of course, there's always the chase-the-tail game that he likes to play by himself. Which is always amusing to watch. Since he's a boxer with just a stub, he'll never be able to catch it, poor guy.

When I was growing up we had a cat that liked to play hide and when Marc comes home from school rush out and bite him in the ankles.

Apparently if I could make it to my bedroom before she got me I was safe... until the next day.

Years later I've wondered if Bill Watterson somehow heard about this and it gave him some ideas for Calvin and Hobbes.

Years ago, when my cat Highway was still alive, he and my sister's Doberman came up with game to play when they were inside. Usually my cat would start it by batting her Dobie in the nose. He'd then chase him through the house until my cat would either dash up the chair or curtains and bat him again, or he'd corner Highway and lick him. Then my cat would chase the dog back through the house. I never thought I'd see the day when a dog and a cat would be playing "Tag, You're It".

If I am not on the computer the cat knows something is wrong. If I am on too much she comes and puts herself in my arms, tries to get me to get away from it.

I had to rerun the cables to the surge protector, then hide the surge protector to keep dogs from turning it off.

cat knows when I make eggs she gets to lick the bowl.

If I skip giving her the bowl to lick- I am in trouble. If I go a day with out making eggs- she ponders it.

I dont want her in the habit of waking me up to get fed- so she knows my routine- when I get up I have my coffee, and when I am hungry then I make the eggs... after "we" eat- then I feed her.

my cat is a backup to my alarm clock.. he gets his 'kitty treat' in the morning (a couple spoonfuls of canned catfood with hairball stuff in it) He's really pushy some days... A cat Jonesing for their 'fix' is VERY insistant!
