Even if this guys numbers are right, and that is an arguable point, then the homicide rate in the UK is 45% of the US rate at most. Still a pretty significant difference.

Fine, but the issue is the ability to accurately use statistics in support of one's position. 45% is not 15% no matter how one slices it. And if that is not important unto itself, why bother with statistics at all?

A homicide rate less than ours is significant. Looking over the data and his source raw numbers it looks to me like he double dipped when he added the murder rate as reported in one source and the deadly assaults listed in another. So it would appear the actual homicide rate in England is at most 20% of ours. And almost all of that difference is in the murders committed with guns.

It is entirely possible that any comparison between the US and UK, as to violent death statistics, is highly problematic.

On to the oopsie. I have frequently in this series referred to the English murder rates as historically low and currently very low compared to US murder rates. I blandly accepted the murder statistics published by the UK Home Office as definitive. I overlooked the details of what and how the English counted "murders." It turns out that was a big mistake. (I was first turned onto my error by this post at Extrano's Alley.)

I fell into a definitions trap you may not be aware of. The shortest version is this. We count and report crimes based on initial data. The Brits count and report crimes based on the outcome of the investigation and trial. Yep, that says what I meant it to say.

We're not comparing apples to apples, we're comparing apples to meatloaf.

Total bollocks....... Crime figures in the UK are not based on the outcome of trials.

this is really weak, are you trying to say that Britain is a violent place? Are you trying to say America isn't a violent place? Are you trying to say that the difference is smaller than people, or should I say Brits, think it is? Or is it a piss poor pro gun thread?
It's so riddled with bollocks I can't tell.

Stay safe, I will, it's easy over here

I think he's trying to say it is entirely possible that any comparison between the US and UK, as to violent death statistics, is highly problematic. I'm not sure where I got that idea, it does seems obscure, but for some reason it popped into my head.

Given the percentage of US murders which are related to inner-city gangbanger bullshit, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Americans outside those free-fire zones are considerably safer than the equivalent 'burb dwelling Briton.

the guy had to trick the numbers to make it appear that way, but it's not and if there is any difference is like 12 out of 648 so not relevant till the second decimal order in term of rates on 100k people

well even if by the tv serial "Midsomer Murders" seems that people in english small towns die at the rate of 3 a week I suppose that also in england criminality is more concentrated in bigger cities and the countryside is safer.

Politesub53 -> RE: Lies, damn lies, and statistics (8/9/2013 4:11:02 AM)

Lies damn lies just about sums up the OP.

Good to see the usual gun nuts wishing the UK Murder rate was somehow higher than that of the US...

I wont be able to sleep at night what with all the worry.

eulero83 -> RE: Lies, damn lies, and statistics (8/9/2013 4:56:21 AM)

well it would be funny to play with the statistics in the link reported by the op, it says that there had been 7729 gun homicides, on another site it says that 40% of usa citizens own one or more gun this makes 125.5 milions, so the rate is 6.15 gun homicide per 100k gun owners in the first 7 months that in a year becomes 10.54 more than double of national average...

chatterbox24 -> RE: Lies, damn lies, and statistics (8/9/2013 5:01:43 AM)

I wonder if there is a day in the history of mankind, not one person was murdered by another? What a good day that would be.

Arguably, then we'd have the only case of murder by natural causes. [8D]

Only if you believe that particular mythology. I don't see how that one is any more or less valid that the mythology that says Odin created the skies by splitting open Ymir's head and using his brains.

I'd actually bet on it.

Our county has about 65K people.
During the ramp up to the Y2K hysteria, the media asked our local sheriff if he was worried about it.
He said he had a few worries about new years and when they asked him to elaborate, he said there had been no murders in the county that year and it would be awfully nice if they could finish the year out like that again (it had happened before).
This is a county that has a huge number of guns/capita.

But we both know that is what really happened.

Odin, the one eyed god of war and confusion.
