The problem with asking this question about subs in general, is that it is way TOO general to have any sort of meaningful answer. You may as well ask 'Why do some people prefer potato chips to pie?' or 'Why do people buy beef when chicken is cheaper?' We could give you a whole list of maybes and possiblies, but it won't help in any way because there are zillions of subs here, and you won't know which one you are dealing with until you try.
Just because two people consider themselves serious, doesn't mean their idea of serious will match up. Person A might think that a really serious sub would be willing to give up his/her job to better serve the dominant. Person B might think a serious dominant would encourage their sub to excel in their career. Person A might think that harsh punishment shows how serious they are about discipline, and person B might think that using punishment shows a superficial approach to it. Entirely possible that the general you is serious, the general them is serious, and the seriouses don't match.
